Bradford City Look To Sign Wells Long Term

April 17, 2012

According to a report in the UK’s Telegraph and Argus, Bradford City will “move to ward off predators” by signing Bermudian footballer Nahki Wells long term in the summer.

“The Bermudian striker currently has another season to go at Valley Parade after the club took up an option to extend his initial one-year deal. But with interest in Wells growing, even more so after his hat-trick at Northampton, they are keen to nail him down properly,” the report said.

Joint-chairman Julian Rhodes said: “The plan was always to take up the option and then talk to him about a longer deal once the season is over.

“We exercised the option early to show how much we valued him and now we’ll look to sit down and do something. He’s a player we’re very excited about. He’s a player we are very excited about. Speak to anyone in the board room and they’ll tell you I’m probably Nahki’s biggest fan

“Speak to anyone in the board room and they will tell you I’m probably Nahki’s biggest fan. I’ve been going on about him for a while. He has been very impressive this season.”

““I’m sure Nahki can go on and play at a higher level,” said Mr Rhodes.

The 21-year-old former Dandy Town star signed with the U.K. team last year, and has scored 11 goals this season as a professional.

Well Done Mr. Wells. This should be inspiration for the youth that are still in middle and highschool to realize that you can make it. And it should also remind the senior players to stop being so arrogant when none of you aint achieved nothing. I dont understand how our Bermuda National Squad senior players and the so called “Premier League” players think they are all of that when they get a quick write up in the paper and they aint done nothing really worthy enough for mention. How can you expect greatness when you guys half-a$$ all the time and do train enough or at all? Mr. Wells keep up the excellent work. Bermuda has only you and a very few others to be proud of. For the rest of you slackers step ya game up!!!!!

Besides being a speaker of the Truth you must also be a painter. Great job painting with such a broad brush.

You are quite welcome sir. It had to be put out there. Im tired of Bermudians half-a$$ing all of the time and expect to be called upon because of who their father is or what family they come from(and we know who gets called up to the national squad or should i say BIAS National Squad). That’s why us as a country will never make it no where in the sporting world because we are too busy trying to pick our favorite or profile players instead of the hard working good ones because of the bias that goes on in this country. Mr. Wells again great job because I know for a fact you are a very hard worker in your sport!!! to the rest of you again step ya game up!!!!!

A little harsh. Many of Bermuda’s players train very hard from a young age. You need to remember that Bermuda has a very shallow talent pool. It would take us 100 generations to get the number of players seen in a single generation of English football (maybe more considering England has a population of around 70mil where as Bermuda is barely 70thousand). It’s a population issue really. Fortunately we can make the most of what we do have thanks to our infrastructure and the opportunity we provide players.

      • The Truth says:

Well i agree with you about us being much smaller however, coming from the “old school” when we had a multiple talent pool to choose from and the hard work and dedication we put in back when Bermuda football was at its prime really vexes me to see the state we are in with supposidly better infrastructure and opportunity that we have today. Back then we didnt have NOTHING, only our heart and soul and pride for our country. Now these youth are got the most expensive everything and they havent done anything worthy of a mention. So the train but in my opinion and from what I have witnessed first hand they dont put enough effort into the game. For the ones that really do put their heart and soul in it dont even get recognized or called up to the squad because of their background.

@Truth, you do realise that you are talking about almost 50 years ago when Bermuda was lucky enough to have a pool of players capable of giving a good account of themselves internationally, right?

You do realise that in the intervening period we have not invested any meaningful sums in our football infrastucture? For example its only in the last 5 years that we have attempted to together a co-herent national program including some sort of practice facility?

You do realise that our clubs barely break even and are largely run by people who don’t have any aptitude for strategy/finance/governance/management?

You do realise that the players directly reflect their sporting enviornment?

You do realise all of this right?

The best we can hope for at the moment is that indiviual players have the genetic pre-disposition, drive and a whole lot of luck to rise above the environment that we have created and maintain for them.

There are a few in the pipeline but it remains to be seen what comes of them.

Please name your squad of 20 that you would have had in the World Cup last year and indeed the Digicel this year. It should be interesting.

    BTW

The Telegraph and Argus is a publication local to Bradford. Your use of “the UKs…” suggests that its a national paper.

From a business of perspective Mr Rhodes’ comments (and indeed any contract offer) will have a second (intentional?) impact – being to drive Wells’ transfer price up.

At 23 and assuming that he does the capacity to play at a higher level he should consider any potential new contract offer from Bradford very carefully.
