Tropical Storm Debby Not A Threat To Bermuda

June 25, 2012

The island looks set to have another bout of inclement weather, with the Bermuda Weather Service [BWS] issuing a Thunderstorm Advisory for this afternoon [June 25] through tonight and warning off possible gale force winds later this week.

The forecast says, “As a trough approaches from the southwest today, wind and showers will slowly increase, with a chance of thunder from late afternoon. Winds remain strong on Tuesday ahead of a cold front, which reaches the area Wednesday and stalls. Gale force gusts will be likely from late Tuesday through Wednesday, as showers increase.”

The advisory comes as the Tropical Storm Debbie — the fourth named storm of the 2012 Atlantic season — is swirling in the Atlantic, The BWS said that Debbie is a not threat to Bermuda, and its closest point of approach to the island within 72 hrs is forecast to be 970 nm to the west at 12pm on Thursday, June 28.

The system has affected the U.S. East Coast however, with USA Today reporting that “Tropical storm warnings were in effect along the Florida Panhandle as the storm parked offshore. Even with the storm’s center far from land, it lashed Florida with heavy rains and spawned isolated tornadoes that killed at least one person. And in Alabama, crews planned to continue searching for a South Carolina man who disappeared in rough surf Sunday afternoon.”
