Child Porn: Man Jailed For One Year

July 2, 2012

[Updated] Paul Boorman was sentenced to one year in prison today [July 2], after being convicted of 14 charges of knowingly accessing child pornography between November 2008 and October 2009. At the time of his arrest he was serving as a probationary Police Constable, however he was dismissed from the force after his arrest.

Boorman had pleaded guilty to all counts. Crown Prosecutor Garrett Byrne had argued for a sentence between twelve and eighteen months. Boorman’s lawyer Ms E Christopher had suggested that the Judge should impose a suspended sentence.

However Justice Greaves said that Boorman had pleaded guilty to a very serious offence and that under the circumstances, he should expect an immediate custodial sentence. He also said that his early guilty plea meant that a jury would not have to be subjected to repulsive pictures being put forward in evidence.

Justice Greaves said that he considered 15 months to be an appropriate sentence but that he would discount three months because of the guilty plea and associated factors.

The one year sentence is to be followed by three years probation and Boorman must take part in programs that are recommended by Court Services. The sentence begins today.

Update 4.58pm: As the photos below show, Boorman took great pains to cover his face while leaving court to begin his prison sentence.

One year? Has justice been served for the children in the pictures that he needed in order to get his end away?

I expect the rest of the child porn enthusiasts on this island have been sent a clear message about the sanctity of a child’s innocence.

    • JJR says:

And we teach our children to go to the Police if they are in danger! DISGUSTING!! And only got a year? This place makes me SICK!!!!!

    • Politely Pompous says:

Goose, you beat me to what I was going to say. What upsets me so much is the fact that you catch some f the people who view this stuff, but what about the poor children who have to endure this sickening abuse? Most won’t be saved. The people who view this and engage in this don’t think about these kids’ pain-both physical and mental. My mind just can’t wrap around a full-grown man having sex with a child-especially a small child…some just toddlers. Do you know how much that must hurt?

A friend of mine who is a police officer overseas had to oversee an examination of a little girl that had been molested-a child of under two years old. I can’t say what she saw because I’m sure it would be deemed too graphic (it involved something being way too large than it should be) but it’s a sickening thing that will stay with her forever. If it makes us mad, imagine the doctors, nurses, social workers and law enforcement officers who see this close up.

BTW-The U.S. announced some time ago that Americans caught engaging in ‘sex tourism’ with under-age kids would be prosecuted even if the crime didn’t happen on U.S. soil. Bermuda needs to look into similar measures-hard to prove, I know, but men need to know that if they go to places like the Dominican Republic and Thailand and have sex with children (and there ARE Bermudian men who do this!) that they WILL be dealt with if it comes to light!!!

  2. starlove says:

One year sentence? I am appalled by the decision made when it comes to this man who was involved in child pornography. Him being sentenced for such little time just sends a message to other people out there that it is ok to do this as you will not get much time in jail. What is going on with the courts and the sentencing here in Bermuda this is not something slight at all. Yet if you get caught bringing in drugs or having drugs on you, you get YEARS and this guy gets 12 months in jail because he plead guilty I am sorry but this judge needs to be taken off the stand.

    • Pastor Syl Hayward says:

I believe the judge was constrained by the limits imposed by the law regarding sentencing. THAT is what needs to change. I am not sure who is campaigning at this time to get these archaic sentencing laws changed, but somebody needs to.

  3. No way says:

He gets a year??? Still, I suppose it’s better than the suspended sentence given out the other month to that fireman who forced a 12 year old to blow him.

  4. Friend says:

    dirty man!

  5. Upsetting says:

A Year? Are you for real? come on now our Court System stinks, what if it was pictures of your child? get it together Judge Greaves, Damn…

  6. What Next says:

Dam one year it’s like the court system is saying it’s cool to do this. He must be one of those Lodge fellow’s walked away just like that.

  7. david chappelle says:

Boooooooo this man! And booooooo this judge!

  8. terry says:

I think the Judge did the right thing.
After all these years and pleading guilty he has a long road to recovery.
Now, lets get the others that do this and those that enjoy this stuff.
    So many do.

SIOUX CITY, IA. — Authorities say that two Iowa men have been given federal prison sentences for downloading child pornography.

News releases released this week by the office of U.S. Attorney Stephanie Rose identify the men as Justin Funck, 28, of Spencer and Charles Melchert, 59, of Humboldt.

Funck had pleaded guilty in November, and on Monday he was sentenced to 65 months in federal prison.

Melchert had pleaded guilty in December, and last week he was sentenced to five years.

Both men must register as sex offenders, authorities said.

MADISON, WI—John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Jeff Matheson, 41, Balsam Lake, Wisconsin was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge William Conley to 13 years in prison, followed by supervised release, for life for distributing images of child pornography on the Internet. Matheson pleaded guilty to the charge on February 23, 2012.

According to court records, on December 12, 2010, an FBI agent signed on to an undercover computer in Plano, Texas and accessed a peer-to-peer file sharing program. The agent saw that a user was sharing child pornography files. The agent started downloading these files from that user’s account and downloaded 399 files in 20 minutes. The agent captured the IP address for that user with special software. The IP address came back to a subscriber in Balsam Lake, Wisconsin.

CLEVELAND — The former pastor of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Olmsted Falls will spend the next six years behind bars for downloading child pornography.

Reverend Dr. Mark Griggs, 50, of Berea was arrested in December 2010 following an investigation by the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task force called “Operation Lake Effect.”

Prosecutors say they found evidence of hundreds of videos and images that had been downloaded to his computer, some of them from the wireless internet access at his church.

“This was on my computer which I alone am responsible for,” Griggs told Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Ronald Suster on Monday.

Griggs earlier pleaded guilty to 83 counts of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor, charges for which he could have been sentenced to a total of more than 600 years.

Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Jesse Canonico told the court on Monday that the images involved children as young as two years old.

They are images that Canonico told Judge Suster had been downloaded and stored on Grigg’s computer.

GRAND RAPIDS – A former Otsego man with a history of abusing children has been sentenced to 26½ years in federal prison after Holland Rescue Mission staff found child pornography on his cellular telephone.

Steven Evink was sentenced Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Gordon Quist for receipt of child pornography.

Once his sentence ends, Evink will be under court supervision the rest of his life, Quist said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie Woods said the public needed to be protected from Evink and others like him.

“Although one hopes that the defendant in this case will not be involved with child pornography in the future, a substantial period of incarceration will certainly prevent that from happening, thereby protecting the public,” she said in court documents.

She filed victim impact statements from known victims of child pornography whose images were found in Evink’s collection.

    • Claudio says:

      • Politely Pompous says:

I’m not saying this because I actually have sympathy for this man (I don’t) but we should all pity this guy. Unless they keep him in his cell 24/7, it’s going to be a miserable 6-8 months for him at Westgate. He better hope he doesn’t get shanked…

        • The nitty gritty says:

Westgate? They got cell phones, knives, weed, heroin, fluffy pillows cable tv and a fair number of “innocent” criminals. You think they can’t get child porn up there too?

  11. Amen says:

This is no surprise much as folks are in denial pornography drives the Internet in all forms not saying it is right but …………who’s throwing the first stone?

    • amen says:

  12. cw says:

@EXPress: that was really something to read; and that guy only received one year. How lucky he is that he is in a country where the judges appear to be on a whole other level.. Perhaps you could forward this information to the judges down here…they need to be “informed”, for certain.

  13. Realist. says:

But yet my cousin gets 2.5 years for herb. SMH. What world am I living in when herb is more frowned upon than child porn.

    • ABC says:

    • TrueSay! says:

Bermuda is another world…apparently another f*cked up world where marijuana is worse than child porn.

Bermuda needs to sort out it’s judicial system’s priorities.

  14. Dee says:

@ Amen…Clearly you are just as sick as he is. If you want to watch porn between consenting adults that’s your biz, but these innocent children have no choice. There is NO way one can defend this….

  15. M.P.Mountbatten JP says:

Why hide your face Paul ? Anyone with a computer could down load it .

  16. bermy drew says:

1 year is a slap in the face to all parents. Let me tell u this Mr. Boorman and the like
if I had my way the inside of a court room would not be the place thst you would face judgement! I would make you suffer 10 fold what the children in these pictures and videos that you seek suffer!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    P.S. THATS A PROMISE!

  17. bermy$hotta says:

F0ck de $ystem…more time fa herb den child porn. GTFOH

  18. swing voter says:

All you calling for more prison time should consider the following

    (1) Prison costs

    (2) His country of origin

    (3) likely-hood to re-offend

I’d rather send this man back home and be rid of him altogether

    • Get the Facts says:

He’s Bermudian and has not touched a child for certain. He is remorseful as I well know. He hides his faces because he has been threatened by strangers who do not know him or the facts. He hides his face because with all the media attention he has lost yet another prospective job for when he gets out. I am mother and (god knows) I would never condone child porn but watching is not the same as doing! That would be like lumping a man who watches porn, with a man who commits adultery. Not the same thing. Yes, he made a huge moral error but judge him accurately for the size of the crime.

    • john doe says:

      @swing voter
      his bermudaian

  19. Unbelievable says:

And what most of you don’t even realize that all sentences over 11 months entitle the convicted to 2/3 off for good behaviour. So he’ll be home around November….
This is excatly why parent’s need to handle their own biz!!! Sick bastards

  20. be humane says:

Yes, children need protection from such acts, and certainly those who promote such acts via file sharing. Judging by the picture this man is clearly ashamed and likely remorseful, and that really ought to be given humane consideration. It is not too uncommon that people commit suicide after being found guilty. He made a mistake but he is still a human being. It would be much more serious if he produced the stuff, but that’s not the case. I think a year is plenty time for a remorseful man, who may not be interested in these acts at all, and may not be as much a monster as everyone is portraying him as. He seems to have harmed himself more than anyone else. Let’s hope he conquers his demons and can be welcomed back with a healthy mindset.

    • smh says:

Who said he is remorseful because he’s hiding him face? He just doesn’t want US to see his face and know who the pervert is! I really can’t understand the people who support these guys and say be “humane”, they cannot, I repeat they cannot be rehabilitated. Intentionally downloading child porn is not a mistake! How do you know all this about him? What in the hell are you talking about? He plead guilty. First step is watching, next step is wanting to do it yourself. IF he hasn’t harmed a child already. Let’s see how forgiving you are if it was your child. You’re a sicko. All of you leaving comments like that ought to be investigated as well.

      • Oh please says:

Remorse after getting caught? Was he remorseful while doing it or before being arrested? I doubt that. Working on the police force in a position of trust and then driving taxi. I do not want him back on the streets so soon! Imagine what he thinks when he looks at your children. This man is SICK!

        • be humane says:

Unfortunate that not many here have faith in rehabilitation. Maybe he is a monster, though I doubt a pure monster would hide his face. Some part of him must have been either embarassed, ashamed or even remorseful at this point. I don’t condone his actions, but i’m not as hateful towards him as most of you sound. Hate the action, help the person, to help everybody.

    • SMH. says:

Let’s hope it ain’t no child that you kno that gets violated when he gets out. This guy should get f#ckin hung.

  21. George says:

Well said be humnae! Though immoral, reprehensible and obviously illegal his actions don’t necessarily make him ‘the animal’ that a majority of commentators here make him out to be.

A psychologist/psychiatrist are the only ones who are qualified to diagnose whether he is a paedophile or has those tendencies or not.

Accessing, creating, distributing child pronography are classified differently under the law for a reason.

Certain acts of consensual acts of sex depicted in adult pronography themselves are still illegal under Bermuda law.

The greatest punishment he will suffer is not going to jail for a year but having to live, once realeased, in such a narrow minded, ignorant community that Bermuda can be sometimes according to the comments above.

    • R.S. says:

      @George…whoa, whoa, whoa.

‘Certain acts of consensual acts of sex depicted in adult pronography themselves are still illegal under Bermuda law’

What are you talking about, guy?

I can’t even imagine what acts you could be talking about that are ‘illegal’ between CONSENTING adults in Bermuda. What I do with my wife is my business, and none of it is illegal. If we want to be freaks, so be it-that’s our right and nobody can stop us.

The only thing I can imagine you’re talking about is anal sex. Well, guess what buddy? It isn’t illegal. I don’t know if it was even ever illegal between man/woman but if you mean man/man, the Stubbs Bill decriminalized that way back in 1995 so if you’re into that you can do it to your heart’s desire.

I don’t know, maybe I just lack imagination but I can’t think of what else there could be that could be illegal.

(If you’re taking about getting down with anything on four legs, you’ve just confirmed that you are on the perverse side…)

  22. LOL (original TM*) says:

More in the RG only half the story here.

    LOL

  23. MAKEMYDAY says:

Only one year in prison!! The sentence does NOT match the severity of the crime – as this P*S is a child pedophile and extreme pervert!! Many of these pedophiles are repeat offenders and some murder their “victims” to avoid detection!! BDA has been extremely lucky over the years that this has not occurred!! This man should also be subject to “chemical castration” as well!!

These following “statements” from the article are crystal-clear and say it all…

The images and videos are believed to have been downloaded via a peer-to-peer file sharing network (pedophile ring)!! A search of the computer revealed, among other pornography, a total of 88 pictures and 51 videos of children engaged in sexual activity – which on a scale of one to five, were “level five,” containing images of sadism and bestiality!!

In the USA he would have to register as a “sex offender” and his address would be a matter of “public record” – which can be located on any computer nationwide at any time!! When children are murdered, or disappear – these are the first suspects the police check-out!!

  24. Leo says:

To this guy and guys like him PLEASE, PLEASE don’t touch my little girl-I don’t want to go to prison for murder.

  25. Withheld says:

Narrow minded – are you kidding? Read the RG which states he had 88 videos and 51 pictures of children engaging in sexual activity and others which included sadism and bestiality. And we are narrow minded to have a problem with THAT? What planet are you from? In what community is this acceptable? Hell?

George and be humane need their computers confiscated and searched as well, the only reason I believe you accept this behaviour is because you want others to think it is normal as you do. You are all worse than animals and monsters, you are pure unadulterated evil and need to be expunged from this earth with the rest if those who find pleasure in the abuse and humiliation of children. I imagine you and mr boorman don’t have any children because the world needs no more like you in it. May your evil end and die with you.

  26. Dee says:

@George…now that you are done defending a creepy pervert, you can go back to your kiddie porn because obviously you enjoy it too!!! What is ignorant and narrow minded about being outraged at child pornography? It would be different if it was adults, but these are children!!! Do you have children? Clearly not, because any right thinking adult and/or parent would be morally outraged by this. I simply do not see how your disgust is directed at the commentators on this site instead of at the man who accessed this vile and horrible stuff…

  27. fireservice says:

tellno way says that the young man is not a firman no more he lost hi job

  28. Spoons says:

Hmmmmm…….in a recent RG poll, 97% of people said Bermuda should have a Sex Offenders Register. So why haven’t we got one then? Who are we protecting by not having one? The cost of creating one is negligable – we obviously keep records of past prisoners/current prisoners offences. Press a button on the bloody computer and you have your sex offenders register. PLP you couldn’t run a p#ss up in a brewery. Maybe there’s a ‘hidden’ reason they won’t implement the policy…”We had to lie to you” (Mr. Ewert-Brown).

  29. Get the Facts says:

And furthermore as someone who was in the court during the case…bestiality was listed as an example of what makes a level 5 video….not stating that Mr. Boorman watched such a video.

  30. No Name says:

I know this guy very well, and he is a very sick sad and pathetic person. I was so surprised that he only got 1 year. This is not his first offense. He has done this previously in another country. People such as this will never recover from there evil
desires. Sadly he will be like this for the rest of his miserable life. Im so happy to be be normal and healthY and to have a wonderful relationship and family. Thank you God !

  31. Know The Facts says:

Guys you don’t have a clue what you are talking about. No Name you are sick and evil person to spread lies/rumours….kick a guy while he is down why don’t you. Paul obviously has his problems and needs help but call a spade a spade. He watched child porn, not participated in it. As disgusting child porn is (I am a mother), I know that watching does not equal doing. If it was the same, then every married man is unfaithful and every person who fantasized about doing someone in is a murderer. All I am saying is condemn for what he has actually done and as a person who does know him, please know that he has never hurt any child.

  32. Strung out says:

Yeah, I remember this guy from years ago, hes been involved with this kind of thing since the early 1970s ! We went college together ! he was a freak back then !Looks like he aint changed much ! He deserves 100 years !
