Prison Officers Association Holds Meeting

The Prison Officers Association [POA] held a meeting yesterday afternoon [July 26] at the Devonshire Recreation Club. What appeared to be approximately 60 people were seen coming out of the building at around 5.15pm.

Officials declined to comment as to the nature of the meeting when asked, but it is unofficially understood that they were discussing concerns they have and what course of action to take to best address them.

Earlier this year prison officers marched on Cabinet and presented a list of grievances to Premier Paula Cox and Attorney General Kim Wilson.

A press statement from the POA at that time said they “deal with a new breed of inmate, one who is more dangerous,” and that they “continue to carry out their duties in the most professional manner despite not having the tools and resources to do so.”

Last month Attorney General Kim Wilson and the POA Chairman Craig Clarke issued a joint press release on the recently conducted prison review, saying they intend for the review to pave the way for five-year strategic plant.

    Perhaps if Government allowed the Commissioner to work with his staff the prison/prisoners situation would have been worked to hang out and there would be no need for any ‘further courses of action’.

    Mr. Commissioner was appointed as head man – let the man do his job!!
