Great White Shark Now South Of Bermuda

February 23, 2013

Mary Lee — a 16 foot long 3456lb Great White shark — is now south of Bermuda, having traveled the length of the island since yesterday morning.

The female shark is being tracked by OCEARCH, a non-profit organization ocean research group, and the tracker indicates the shark was off St George’s yesterday and as of this morning is approximately 40 miles off the west end.

According to National Geographic, “The legendary great white shark is far more fearsome in our imaginations than in reality. As scientific research on these elusive predators increases, their image as mindless killing machines is beginning to fade.

“Of the 100-plus annual shark attacks worldwide, fully one-third to one-half are attributable to great whites. However, most of these are not fatal, and new research finds that great whites, who are naturally curious, are “sample biting” then releasing their victims rather than preying on humans. It’s not a terribly comforting distinction, but it does indicate that humans are not actually on the great white’s menu.

“Great whites are the largest predatory fish on Earth. They grow to an average of 15 feet (4.6 meters) in length, though specimens exceeding 20 feet (6 meters) and weighing up to 5,000 pounds (2,268 kilograms) have been recorded.”

  1. Truth is killin' me... says:

    Forget about the sharks in the water…watch out for the “sharks” on land!

    • Ballotelli says:

      Yeah, they can track a fish 40 miles off shore and they can’t pin shootings on a few hundred kiddie gangsters, with more cameras than most places on earth.

      Why is that I wonder? Ah yes, another $2.3m for the police yesterday…so much to do!

      • Xman says:

        @Ballotelli – Best Comment of the year!
        Anyone of persons known to be gang members or have gang affiliation should be made to wear a GPS bracelet .— same way they are tracking this Shark.

      • Deliverance says:

        @Ballotelli AGREED!

    Now Miss Mary Lee, move along there please…wishing you well, but visiting in May and would much rather not worry about you being beneath our feet in the gorgeous blue waters…there’s a good girl.

    • Micro says:

      I’d be more worried about the man-o-war and all the other sharks that dwell off the island than Mary Lee.
