Bermudian Wealth Reporter On BBC TV

March 4, 2013

Investigating and writing about the true net worth of the notoriously secretive super-rich and famous isn’t an easy job — but Bermudian “Forbes” magazine reporter and blogger Clare O’Connor does it so well she was interviewed about the subject on BBC TV this morning [Mar 4.]

Ms O’Connor, a former Bermuda High School student and a veteran of the local print media, describes her job at the magazine as “the billionaire beat: wealth, entrepreneurs and money in politics.”

The New York-based journalist talked to the “BBC News 24″  show about the financial magazine’s Billionaire List — an annual ranking of the world’s wealthiest individuals — which was released this morning.

“I’m a staff writer on the Forbes wealth team and spend half the year chasing the super-rich for our Forbes 400 and World’s Billionaires lists,” she has posted about her job. “I’ve written magazine stories on talk show mogul Oprah Winfrey’s South African school , the youngest self-made woman on the rich list thanks to inventing Spanx, and a monk who became a billionaire selling 5-Hour Energy shots.

“Before Forbes, I worked as a news reporter in the UK and my home country of Bermuda, a travel writer for Frommer’s and an intern for CNN’s Anderson Cooper while completing a master’s degree at Columbia University.”

New York mayor and information technology magnate Michael Bloomberg — a part-time Bermuda resident — ranked 12th on this year’s Forbes Billionaires List. Two-time US Presidential candidate Ross Perot, who also owns a home on the island, appeared in the 384th spot. And Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich — whose mega-yacht “The Eclipse” was in Bermuda earlier this year — came in at 107th with a fortune estimated at $15.5 billion.
