Age Concern Bermuda Announces New Board

Age Concern Bermuda conducted its 35th Annual General Meeting and have ushered in a new Board. Age Concern’s Executive Director, Claudette Fleming announced today [June 5] that she is “excited to see the addition of new members who are not only respected in their own right but who are well versed in the issues currently facing Bermuda community”.

New Board members include: former politicians Mrs. Louise Jackson, and Mr. Erwin Adderley; healthcare professionals: Mrs. Valerie Cheape and Carole Paynter and; new Treasurer Ms. Nicky Madeiros.

In addition to the new Board members, newly elected officers include: Canon James Francis as Chairperson, Mrs. Estlyn Harvey, Vice Chairperson, and Mr. Ottiwell Simmons, Secretary. Remaining Board members include: Mr. Charles Jeffers, Mr. Jonathan Brewin, Dr. Dwayne Thompson, Mrs. Linda Smith, Mrs. Karmeta Hendrickson and Mr. Dwain Smith.

Departing Chairperson, Mrs. Kathy Anne Swan indicated in her AGM address that “like, other charities, it has been a very challenging year, however we have managed to turn roadblocks into bridges.”

“One of the major triumphs for Age Concern in the last year has been to service 224 persons with needed financial assistance due to the economic climate. The organization hopes that with the new installation of the first ever Minister dedicated to seniors that the country will finally realize an effective national ageing strategy that targets old and young people”, a spokesperson said.

Mrs. Fleming also specified that new Chairperson, Canon Francis has already set a “no nonsense” approach to the organization’s work during the next 24 months. “He has already started to put people in place to ensure that the organization and our advocacy efforts yield tangible results.”

“The amendments to the Human Rights legislation to include age as a basis of discrimination in the workplace, remains a high priority advocacy agenda for Age Concern’s Board and members.”
