Final Day: HSBC BJGA International Golf Classic

August 8, 2013

The final round of the 2013 HSBC BJGA International Classic was held today [Aug 8] at the Port Royal Golf Course where Mitchell Campbell was crowned boys champion and Elizabeth Parsons crowned the girls champion.

Elizabeth Parsons put together another solid round of golf with a round of 87 to close out the Classic but is looking forward to some of the up and coming female golfers to providing a challenge in the years to come.

Mitchell Campbell took advantage of his NatWest Island Games experience to fire a great round of 73, coming home in even par on the back nine to hold off his younger brother for the title.

Walker Campbell finished the week in second place after a final round of 79, including an eagle at the par five 17th, his second eagle of the week. Justin Dixon Watts held off Daniel Hetzel for third place in the Division.

All but one of the players in the HSBC BJGA International Classic will be playing this weekend in the HSBC Junior National Par 3 Championships hosted by Turtle Hill Golf Club where they will be joined by a handful of other players.

Dakota Lamb coasted home for the 13-15 Division title, closing with a round of 84. Brady Cordeiro left himself with too much to do to catch Dakota, but he did manage to over-take James Robertson to finish as runner-up. James pipped Mikus Ming for third place by one stroke.

Benjamin Barnett fired the low round of the day for this division with a round of 80, ruing a double bogey on the last hole. All three of the first-time players had their best scores of the week on the final day with Jonny Page the lowest, shooting an even 100 – oh so close to breaking into the 90’s.

Kenny Leseur captured his maiden Major victory, taking the 12 & Under Division as a nine-year old. Kenny was pushed all week by Joe Watson, a newcomer to the BJGA programme and another young man showing great promise.

In the Novice Division, Tyler Emery didn’t show any rust from his day off yesterday, firing a round of 56 over the front nine at Port Royal to best Connor Smith, who matched Tyler on the day.

Nicholas Weikl, the youngest player in the field at 8 years old, recovered with a score 22 shots better than his first round and we look forward to seeing him develop through this programmed over the next few years.

“The BJGA would like to thank the Port Royal Golf Course for hosting us today and again to all the golf courses this week. The BJGA owes a huge thank you to HSBC for their sponsorship of this event and the HSBC BJGA Week of Golf and their support with marketing and logistics”, a spokesperson said.

“Finally, the BJGA could not operate any programming without the support of volunteers, so a huge thank you to all the volunteers who came out this week and throughout the season to support the BJGA”.
