Appleby Announces 2013 Scholarship Recipients

Appleby on Thursday [Sept 5] announced its 2013 scholarship and bursary recipients. For over 35 years, the Partners of Appleby have awarded scholarships and bursaries to qualified Bermudian applicants.

The firm’s Legal Education Scholarship, valued at $30,000, is awarded to Catherine Campbell, a recent graduate with first class honours from University of Leicester, who begins her studies this month at University College London to pursue an LLB.

Appleby Scholarship & Bursary recipients 2013

Appleby Bursaries are awarded to five students this year: Andrew Burnett-Herkes, currently enrolled at University of Portsmouth where he is pursuing an LLB; Shannon Cann, a recent graduate of University of the West of England, who begins her studies this month at The University of Law to pursue an LLM; Katherine Davidge, currently studying at University of Kent where she is pursuing an LLB; Cathryn Minors, a recent graduate of University of the West of England, who is attending The University of Law this month to pursue an LLM LPC; and Melissa Spurling, currently enrolled at University of Kent where she is pursuing an LLB.

The Appleby Legal Education Scholarship and Bursaries are awarded each year to Bermudian students who are pursuing legal studies and intending to return to Bermuda to practice law.

In addition, the firm’s Berkeley Institute Scholarship is awarded to Allanna Bean, who is attending Johnson & Wales University this month to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Counseling Psychology. The Berkeley Institute Bursary is awarded to China Richardson, who is attending Bermuda College to pursue studies in risk management and insurance.

The firm’s partnership with The Berkeley Institute began in 1995 to honour their common goal of excellence at school and at work. Berkeley graduating students seeking to continue their education in Bermuda or abroad, at either the Grade 12/13 or Associates Degree level, are eligible to apply for The Berkeley Institute Scholarship and Bursary each year.

Bermuda Managing Partner Kiernan Bell commented, “Each year we review applications from highly academic and well-rounded Bermudians and this year’s recipients are a testament to the level of talented young people we continue to see in our community.

“The future of the legal profession looks very bright. We congratulate each of our recipients for their hard work and success thus far, and look forward to their future contributions in Bermuda’s business sector and local community.”
