Rachael Barritt, Chair of the Student Committee said, “Samantha was chosen as she best exemplified the qualities that we were looking for in our scholarship winner. In addition to her strong academic performance, Samantha impressed us with her strong work ethic, leadership qualities and community involvement.

“We were impressed by Samantha’s interview where she proved herself as a bright, driven and personable young law student who is on the path to becoming a solid contributor to the legal fraternity in Bermuda.”

Stephen’s application materials instantly grabbed the attention of the Student Committee, and he was so inspiring and impressive during his interview that the Committee decided to expand its mandate for 2013 and offer Stephen a bursary of $3,000 to assist him in his endeavours.

Kevin Taylor, Managing Director said, “Stephen stood out as he demonstrated such a strong commitment to becoming a lawyer and returning to Bermuda to pursue his career. Marshall Diel & Myers Limited looks forward to helping him achieve that goal not only with financial support but mentoring support as he moves forward with his studies”

its a pity that the support aspiring law students get from the Bermuda legal fraternity in their university days doesn’t continue when they seek pupilages for a call to the Bermuda bar

the Bermuda Bar will accept a call from any qualified attorney in the common law world irrespective of which legal jurisdiction they obtained their legal education from unlike Canada, United Kingdom Australia etc

this naturally puts the young aspiring law student at a great disadvantage as firms will naturally seek to invest time and resources into getting an experienced overseas attorney called and not an inexperienced student

note how many law students Bermuda creates and than compare that number with the numbers actually called to the Bermuda Bar and further those offered employment in established firms

unfortunately for these two the deck has already been stacked against them if they wish to seek a call to this honourable Bar

if advice where heeded they should seek a call to the Bar of England & Wales gaining valuable and marketable experience and view a call to the Bermuda Bar as an option a last option
