Premier & Championship Interest In Nahki Wells

January 2, 2014

Both Premier League and Championship teams have shown interest in Nahki Wells, Bradford City joint chairman Mark Lawn said during an interview on Sky Sports News Radio.

While Mr Lawn wouldn’t confirm the exact teams interested in the 23-year-old Bermudian striker, he did say that “more than one club” is interested and confirmed that Bradford had a “firm bid from one club.”

“There’s been a couple of Premier League sides shown interest, a couple of Championship sides and a couple of others as well,” Mr Lawn told Sky Sports News Radio.

“Our still preferred option would be to give Nahki a new contract, and for him to stay with us,” added Mr Lawn.

“But as you know there’s only 18 months on it, so we need to start looking at really what’s best for the football club as well as Nahki. And he wants to play at the highest level as soon as possible I think.”

Asked by the radio host whether he thinks Wells has the ability to play in the Premier League, Mr Lawn said: “Yeah, I do actually.”

“I certainly think he’ll be a bargain for someone to pick up. I’m not just saying that because he’s ours obviously, but his finishing, his pace and he’s a very cool customer as well and I don’t think he’d worry.

“I am going to be quite honest, you see the benches at Premier League and I am sure that Nahki could be an impact player for them,” added Mr Lawn.

“He can score goals. That is what you need, you do need goals on your team. If you need a goal scorer…and they are hard to find.”

As the football transfer window looms, Bradford City’s Phil Parkinson said they would like to resolve the circumstances surrounding Nahki Wells early “one way or another.”

Mr Parkinson told the Telegraph & Argus that “The key to it is that I’d like it resolved early one way or another. Obviously there are players out there who are available and who we’re looking at should Nahki go.

“I’ve got to do that in terms of making sure we are covered if that scenario should happen. What concerns me is if the window draws to a close and he goes right at the end of it. Then the players who are possibly available we might lose.

“The best scenario is that we keep him because he’s a terrific goalscorer. But we’ve got to make sure we get it right. We’ve got to start winning games of football.”

“The speculation about whether Nahki is going or staying has been going on for quite a long time now, since last summer. We need to get it resolved.”

I understand the firm bid is from QPR, with interest from Norwich City and Leicester City also.

Go QPR…Norwich are going down (sorry Chris Houghton) and QPR are likely to return to BPL very very soon

Ive enjoyed watching him grow over the last few years and I’ve wanted to seem him move to a Liverpool, Man U, Man City or Arsenal caliber team.

Funny thing is that I’ve actually grown quite fond of Bradford City and the team as a whole and Im curious to see how far the “underdog of a team” can go. I want to see him make it to the “Big Leagues” but at the same time I’m Luvin watching Bradford City grow and win.

I wish Nhaki and Bradford City a great 2014 and beyond!

At the moment he is a the big fish in a little pond, which is sometimes better than being a little fish in a big pond.

    • Martin Samuel says:

Would be a disaster for him going to a top 6 club. Aside from the fact they would never take someone from League 1 – the jump is too big, he would never get a game, and would rot. Championship is more likely.
