Minors Receives University Football Scholarship

February 27, 2014

calon minors [Updated] Berkeley Institute Deputy Head Boy Calon Minors signed the dotted line of the National Letter of Intent to attend the University of South Carolina Upstate, with the 17-year-old athletic standout having been offered a football scholarship.

Calon, an Honour student at Berkeley, became a hot commodity after his impressive showing at the Bermuda School Sports Federation [BSSF] All Star game in January 2014. In this event Calon scored two goals from midfield and was voted the MVP. It was after this that Minors started to receive offers to attend US schools.

Calon, who was an integral part of the BSSF College showcase to IMG Academy and MontVerde Academy in 2012, has developed his skills at local club BAA. With the strong contact between Mr. Quincy Aberdeen and Coach Greg Hooks, Head Coach of the USC Upstate Spartans Men’s soccer team, Calon was offered a football scholarship.

The teenager said he would like to give honour to God, and thanked his parents Clark and Beverley Minors for their love and support in everything they do for him.

He also extended his thanks to Quincy Aberdeen, Irving Romaine, Richard North, Mr Lewis, Berkeley Principal Dr. Phyllis Curtis-Tweed, his S4 head Mrs. Douglas for keeping on top of him academically and Coach Thompson at BAA.

Calon said, “I am a currently completing my final year at The Berkeley Institute. It has been a tough journey through my four years here and I am proud to say I am almost done.

“As most of you may know I am a very passionate soccer player but at the same time I know that school is just as important. Author Helen Keller said and I quote the most pathetic person in the world is someone who has sight, but has no vision. I have lived my high school life off of that quote.

“From the first day I stepped on Campus I know I wanted to finish Berkeley and go to University on a soccer scholarship. Every day since then I have worked hard to see that plan to fruition.

Calon will head to the University of South Carolina Upstate in the the fall of 2014, and will be a part of their NCAA Men’s Division 1 Soccer program, who compete in the Atlantic Sun Division.
