Solo Kayaker Will Attempt Repairs At Sea

Trans-Atlantic kayaker Aleksander Doba, 67, was 110 nautical miles southwest of Bermuda on Wednesday [Feb 19], paddling towards the island to affect repairs to the rudder of his kayak.

Local marine towing company Sea Assist will transport Mr. Doba’s close friend Piotr Chmielinski, along with visiting media, to meet up with the kayaker in an effort to make repairs and allow him to continue on his journey.

A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “At noon on Wednesday, February 19, the trans-Atlantic kayaker Aleksander Doba, 67, was 110 nautical miles southwest of Bermuda paddling towards the island to affect repairs to the rudder of his 20 foot kayak “Olo.”

“Doba is attempting to become the first person to travel from Europe to North America in a kayak, departing Portugal on October 5, 2013, bound for Florida.

“His friend and supporter Piotr Chmielinski has arrived on the island with two journalists from the National Geographic magazine and the Polish press.

“Local marine towing company Sea Assist has been tasked by Chmielinski to transport him and the journalists to rendezvous with the Polish adventurer

“Two Sea Assist crew will set off in the early hours of Thursday morning accompanied by the three visitors and expect to meet up with Mr. Doba and the “Olo” less than 100 nautical miles southwest of the island at around midday.”
