Photos: CedarBridge Hosts Law Symposium
A young man raised his hand; he had a question for Senior Magistrate Archie Warner, “Does a person have to go to an assigned family member, if they do not want to?” This is one of several questions CedarBridge Academy students asked Magistrate Warner, who, along with Family Court Magistrate, Nicole Stoneham, visited CedarBridge Academy to present a symposium on Law.
The Citizenship curriculum has a unit on Bermuda Law, which covers criminal and civil law. Family Court Magistrate Stoneham, was there to present information on the family court system and to answer a slew of questions students had about custody and maintenance payments. One item of interest to students was the fact that once a child reaches a certain age; they can be involved in the process of custody and can decide their own fate.
Jordan Simmons-Trott, an S2 Student who attended the symposium said, “It was very educational and interesting. May of my peers were interested and asked questions about family court, like what happens if a child runs away from home or what happens if persons cannot afford maintenance payments.” He explained that the speakers, spoke clearly and answered the questions so thoroughly, that students who had the same type of question, could ask something else.
The Symposium on Law was held in the school’s library. Over 125 S2 students were in attendance. The symposium focused on the court system, procedural matters, sentencing and juvenile offences. “The symposium was informative for the students, as we prepare to continue on with this unit on Law,” said Social Studies/Citizenship teacher Mrs. Darlene Warner. “They discussed court proceedings, the hierarchy of the court, criminal cases, family court and civil cases.”
“You could tell that students were interested,” Jordan Simmons-Trott said. “There was not a lot of talking. They listened.”

Excellent informative session for the students to learn. A high attendance level by students. Well done Cedarbridge for hosting such a great Symposium on Law for the students, whom benefited well. Great Session !
Please help me understand how this topic helps high school students? This should be held for parents…IMHO…
Sorry to be the bad guy,
4 weeks before the publicly funded GCSE exams (1 week is Easter break)
Now is not the time to be having group lectures with S2 students, they should be in study mode.
Not saying it’s not useful, but honestly 4 year groups to choose from and you have a symposium with the S2 students?!
