Ashay Rites of Passage Summer Camp

June 29, 2014

Ashay: Rites of Passage is returning this summer as an independent initiative entitled Ashay Clubs, with two summer camps set to utilize the Ashay Club curriculum in their 2014 programs.

A spokesperson said, “As you may recall, Ashay teaches global African history and culture from an empowered, African-centered perspective. The program relays what I call the “lessons of empowerment” emanating from global Black history, culture, struggles, achievements, and values to inspire motivation, self-esteem, and pride.

“The cornerstone tenet of Ashay Clubs is The Ashay Objectives, which all children and teachers must learn. The Objectives, written by Mwalimu Melodye Micere Van Putten, contain four statements, including:

  • I am valuable and have genius.
  • My history and culture are sources of knowledge with lessons to be learned.
  • I must develop my character in order to be successful in life.
  • The World is waiting for me to contribute my gifts and talents.

“The summer camps that will be incorporating the Ashay Clubs curriculum in their programs include the Innovative Minds Art Camp [IMAC] and the Mind, Body & Soul Camp [MBS].

“IMAC, for children ages 5 to 12, will be held at the North Village Community Club Educational Centre [Bernard's Park] from Monday though Friday from 8.30am to 5.30pm.

“The IMAC registration fee is $50 and includes a camp t-shirt. The weekly fee is $125 and includes an Ashay Club workbook, art supplies, costumes for play, and sporting equipment. Tenisha Dill [visual arts teacher] and Shalane Dill [theatre arts teacher] are the Directors of the programme.

“IMAC specializes in visual, performing, and creative arts, incorporating sports, field trips, and more. To register, email imacbda@gmail.com or call 532-2969 or 537-7445.

“MBS, presented by Target Learning, is for girls aged 12 to 16 at Frances Patton School from Monday through Friday from 8.30am to 3.00pm. Keisha Allen-Smith is the Director of the programme.

“The weekly fee is $130 and includes an Ashay Club workbook, yoga, healthy living activities, and nature activities. MBS specializes in a holistic approach to introducing teenage girls to empowering knowledge essential to the development of healthy self-esteem, motivation, and pride. To register, email targetsummercamp@gmail.com or call 334-7145.

“Both summer camp programs welcome and encourage community-minded folks who are able to sponsor a child who would not otherwise be able to attend a summer camp program.”
