Film Series To Screen Sports, Ebert Films

July 15, 2014

A documentary about the world’s lowest-ranked international football team and a portrait of the late film critic Roger Ebert will feature at the Weekend Film Series on Saturday July 19, 2014, set to be held at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI].

A spokesperson said, “Next Goal Wins, screening at 3.00pm, is a feel-good film about the love of the game and the power of hope. In 2001, the tiny Pacific island of American Samoa suffered a world record 31-0 defeat to Australia. A decade after that humiliating night, they remain rooted to the bottom of FIFA’s world rankings, having scored only twice in 17 years. They have lost every competitive game they have ever played.”

Official ‘Next Goal Wins’ trailer:

“It would take a miracle-maker or a madman to turn the team’s fortunes around, and in maverick Dutch coach Thomas Rongen the islanders somehow find both. With the team about to embark on a gruelling World Cup qualification campaign, Rongen has just one month to transform this ragtag band of losers into a winning team and perhaps learn a little about himself along the way.”

“We have all just spent a month watching the world’s best teams – this is a profile of the team ranked lowest in the FIFA rankings,” said Weekend Film Series programmer Duncan Hall. “This is an irresistible underdog story, and you don’t have to be a sports fan to enjoy it.”

Official ‘Life Itself’ trailer:

Life Itself, screening at 5.15pm, is based on Mr. Ebert’s best-selling autobiography of the same name. Directed by Steve James [Hoop Dreams, The Interrupters], this is a warmly affectionate documentary film that recounts the inspiring and entertaining life of world-renowned film critic and social commentator Roger Ebert – a story that is by turns personal, funny, joyful, and poignant.”

Tickets to the screenings are on sale now at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute’s Oceans Gift Shop, or by calling 294-0204.
