Cricket Postponed: ‘Heightened Security Risk’

September 27, 2014

The Bermuda Cricket Board has postponed tomorrow’s [Sept 28] T20 and U17 All-Star game, citing a “heightened security risk, subsequent to recent incidents.”

In a statement sent out this evening, the BCB said, “Due to advice regarding a heightened security risk, subsequent to recent incidents, the Lindos T20 and the BF&M U17 All-Star game, scheduled to take place on Sunday 28 September at SCC, have both been postponed until further notice.”

While this was not implicitly stated, Bernews understands this is correlated with this evening’s incident, which saw two suspects on a motorcycle dressed in white clothes chase a black car from Devonshire, through Paget, Warwick and into Southampton, eventually firing shots at the car, which crashed in Southampton.

Details on that incident can be found here.

  1. Lets hope says:

Very sad! We need to stop blamming government and we need to stop blamming the police. This barbaric behavior rest solely on the breeders of these lunatics. This madness needs to stop!

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

Yes… We KNOW it needs to stop!!! But how are you going to do that?? There was a lull for a couple of years with these “shootings” – but they appear to have gained momentum again!!

Take a look at Chicago and all the “inner city” ghetto’s in the states!! They have the very same problems – but can’t stop them – or even slow-them-down!!

What is your “solution” for this out-of-control gun problem??

  2. Truth is killin' me... says:

So the local terrorists are holding the island hostage! Time to increase penalties for gun possession, murder!! Do it OBA…YESTERDAY!!!

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

See my comment to “Lets hope”!! Wishing and hoping – does NOT unfortunately bring solutions!!

  3. yamon says:

Sad the car driver didn’t just run them over. Problem solved.

  4. Coffee says:

    • Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

you’re proving a point coffee…i guess its not just stereotypical then…

    • Unbelievable says:

Coffee, you have a lot of hate in you. Whatever it is that you seem to be hung up on makes you a bitter person.

      • Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

thats because he just don’t understand…

        • Coffee says:

What are you people on about .. I love and support the triathlon community ! Stop it with your misguided hatred of everything I post .

  5. Rockfish#1 says:

    Bernews,

    Football matches still on?

    • Bernews says:

As of this time, we haven’t heard of any football cancellations

  6. Confused says:

This is sad for the individuals who have trained and looked forward to this event. The innocent suffer for the guilty.

  7. the correct facts says:

Maybe the fans may take head to …..
if you see something say something…..so their Sunday activivties wont be in jeprody.

    • Annie says:

Do YOU know anything? No? So why do you assume the fans know anything? Not everyone knows who these thugs are, you know.

  8. Come On Man says:

So the lunatics are laughing, they have the power to stop a cricket game because our authority’s don’t have a clue how to catch and stop these fools from spoiling it for other’s. Now we know who controls the streets. And it’s not the Police.

  9. sage says:

“the gunmen were dressed in all white…”

  10. Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

well …you asked for it, you got it….a nanny state for YOUR safety n protection(haha what a farce)…now you will be dictated to as to when you can enjoy a social life or WHAT you can enjoy, they’ve already got you locked in from 8-5 at work now its time to get into your off times too, all because YOU bitched and moaned about some political party that isn’t succeeding at controlling YOUR relatives who are apparently not worth the air that they breath…face it YOU are destroying the quality of life you so desperately seek, slipping away from you.

  11. street wise says:

An over reaction by the BCB, IMHO…..

    • Sammy says:

Not necessarily an over reaction… you can easily hide a machete in a cricket bat. (Swords in walking canes comes to mind)

  12. concerned says:

It is disgusting to think that these shooters can shut down today’s cricket. The police must provide a level of confidence for the community. Stopping scheduled events only lowers the level of confidence.

    • Varied says:

Only thing that makes sense is that there wouldn’t be enough officers available to ensure the safety of players/supporters at SCC. Sad situation all around, particularly for the young players.

  13. Law man says:

This is ridiculous,do not give any more taxpayers monies to the clubs, until they actively try to stop the criminal activity, around and on their premises.

    • Hmmm says:

      Absolutely spot on!

    • I heart 441 says:

What makes you think the clubs get Government funds? Furthermore, most clubs stem out any form of negative conduct from their players. Its only so much a club can do.

  14. Navin Johnson says:

Southampton Princess was 97% occupied over the weekend with a car chase crashing into the entrance that would leave a wonderful impression …1 step forward 2 steps back
