A statement from the Gilbert & Sullivan Society said, “Dear Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Bermuda patrons, members, cast, crew and audiences,It is with a very heavy heart that we must announce the cancellation of all of the remaining run of The Pirates of Penzance due to the pending arrival of Hurricane Gonzalo.

“As pursuant to previous messages to all of you, the safety of our audience, actors and crew is our greatest concern. As such, with the eye of the storm expected to make landfall mid to late in the afternoon on Friday, if not later, we see no path to safely hold our shows on Saturday while the storm may still be affecting us, or on Sunday in the aftermath of the storm.

“Tonight’s show is cancelled in advance of the storm and so that everyone can make proper preparations for it. As per our previous messages, Friday’s show had already been postponed to Sunday, but is now also cancelled along with all other remaining shows.

“We thank you for all of your support and, on behalf of the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Bermuda, would urge all ticket holders, if possible, to consider your ticket purchase as a donation to the Society to help offset the cost of this year’s show. A DVD of the performance will be made available for general circulation to all those who do so along with other merchandise. Please follow our website and monitor your email in box for further information.

“Thank you again for your support and stay safe in the storm. If, by some miracle, Bermuda is spared any significant damage we may reassess the situation; however, as stated, all remaining shows are cancelled at this time.”
