Masterworks To Presents An[Other] World

Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art will present An[Other] World, a “major exhibition bringing contemporary Bermudian artists into dialogue with works from the Museum’s Permanent Collection.”

A spokesperson said, “Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art is pleased to announce their next major exhibition in the Butterfield Gallery, An[Other] World, curated by Jasmine Lee and Daisy Gould. With the exception of Masterworks’ biennial Charman Prize, An[Other] World marks the second time contemporary Bermudian artists will be presented in this space, following the legacy of Gherdai Hassell’s exhibition.

“An[Other] World is a group exhibition that brings the Museum’s Permanent Collection into dialogue with contemporary and newly commissioned works. Placing familiar favourites alongside works being shown publicly for the first time, the exhibition explores the role of visual art in creating history and preserving cultural memory in Bermuda. An[Other] World invites audiences to look anew at the works that have shaped our understanding of Bermuda, while considering how contemporary artists continue to expand, challenge, and reinterpret that visual history.

“Collections are built and cared for with intention and purpose, and the Masterworks Collection was initially established in part to repatriate works made by visiting artists to Bermuda – making work about Bermuda available for Bermudians. Yet no collection, however thoughtfully assembled, can fully represent the many perspectives and experiences of a community. An[Other] World therefore presents the Collection as one voice among many, inviting audiences to [re]consider its artists alongside the contemporary artists represented in the exhibition. In a place as diverse as Bermuda, what we see informs how we think, and what we think informs how we see; by bringing together different visions and voices, An[Other] World emphasizes that each story contributes to the uniquely Bermudian experience and to a fuller understanding of Bermuda’s visual culture.”

‘Developing this exhibition alongside Jasmine and the many artists involved has been a dream come true,’ says co-curator Daisy Gould, ‘this is exactly the type of show I’ve always wanted to see in Bermuda. Art isn’t just beautiful objects in a gallery space; it’s a means of uncovering and experimenting with new ways of thinking of, existing in, and being with the world. It’s an important tool to help us move forward and think of new ways of living, in a way that is collective and understanding, appreciating the many [Other] worlds we all inhabit.

‘An[Other] World is just the start of an ongoing conversation, one that will take shape not only over the course of the exhibition but after, with the release of the exhibition catalogue at the end of the show’s run in the spring. I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve started and eager to see where this goes.’

A spokesperson added, “The exhibition features contemporary works by Charlie Godet Thomas, Yesha Townsend, Bill Ming, Jordan Carey, Gherdai Hassell, Jahbarri Wilson, Nadiyah Brown, OYANGO, Cy Gavin, Antoine Hunt, Michael Walsh, Jayde Gibbons, Nicola Muirhead, James Cooper, Graham Foster, Calix Smith, Charles Zuill, Sharon Muhammad, Kevin Morris, Edwin Smith, Olivia Rose, Christina Hutchings, and John Gardner, alongside selected works from the Masterworks Permanent Collection.”

“Realising this exhibition has been a joy and a privilege,”shares Masterworks Curator, Jasmine Lee. “It’s been a joy working with Daisy, whose research into Bermuda’s contemporary art landscape is as inspiring as it is important. And it’s been a privilege to work closely with these artists – through studio visits, tours of the Masterworks archive, and, with some, new commissions developed for this exhibition. I’m proud that we’re able to support artist participation with stipends; it’s a hard time to be an artist in this economy, and easing that burden where we can matters to me. I’m eager to see how the community responds – I hope it sparks ideas, dialogue, and perhaps challenges us too.”

A spokesperson added, “An[Other] World is jointly curated by two Bermudian curators whose practices are deeply engaged with questions of contemporary art, cultural identity, history and representation.

“Jasmine Lee is a Bermudian curator and artist and currently serves as Curator of Contemporary Art at Masterworks Museum. Her curatorial interests are rooted in expanding the scope and definition of contemporary art and artists, particularly in Bermuda, the Caribbean and their diasporas. Lee was a 2024–25 New Curators Fellow, through which she curated an exhibition of Duane Linklater at Camden Art Centre in 2025. In Bermuda, she has curated exhibitions across Masterworks’ galleries, including Permanent Collection, Contemporary and Charman Prize exhibitions.

“Daisy Gould is a Bermudian curator, writer and consultant currently based between London and Bermuda. Her research engages Caribbean art and theory, with a focus on contemporary Bermudian practices and the intersections of aesthetics, ecology and decolonial thought. Gould has previously worked within the curatorial teams at Serpentine Gallery, Hayward Gallery and Tate. She holds a BA in Art History and an MA in Contemporary Art Theory and is currently a PhD candidate in the History of Art at The Courtauld.
