Elite & International Athletes Set To Compete

June 11, 2015

With the XL Catlin Bermuda National Athletics Championships set to take place this weekend, Bermuda National Athletics Association President Donna Watson provided an overview of the elite and international athletes who are set to compete.

Ms. Watson said, “As we put our final preparations together for the XL Catlin Bermuda National Athletics Championships we are excited that we have six international athletes to compete against our local athletes. We also have several of our own Elite overseas athletes home to compete against these athletes.

“We are going to be having an Elite International field in the 800m race which is shaping up to be very exciting. Our very own Aaron Evans [1.46.23], Shaquille Dill[1.47.76], Dage Minors [1.50.14], Lamont Marshall and young Michaiah Robinson will be up against some fierce competition.

“We have Jamall James from Trinidad with a PB of 1.46.57, Sean Obinwa [Nigeria] with a PB of 1.46.68, Moise Joseph from Haiti with a PB of 1.45.74 so you can see that this Elite 800m race is going to be great with all of the athletes preparing for either the Pan Am Games or attempting to qualify for the World Championships.

“Not to be out done we have also brought in a female 800m runner to compete against our own Kyrah Scraders plus some of our youth.

“Tre Houston who is home, just coming off a 200m this past weekend with a time of 20.42 and getting prepared for the Pan Am Games, will be competing in the 100m and 200m against Kyle Webb who has been having such a great season overseas and preparing for University this year, Lovintz Tota who has been training and competing overseas with Tre and several of our young athletes, Kionje Somner and others.

“We have brought in Charles Greaves from the USA who will be competing in the 100m. Charles will also be competing in the Long Jump and Triple Jump with Bruce Degrilla who has been overseas and Ethan Philip who has had a great season thus far.

“Sakari Famous, who won one of the Government sports scholarship, is currently working with a top overseas High Jump coach and we have a female High Jumper Emma Kimoto from Canada to compete against her.

“We are hoping to have some of the top road racers competing in the longer races,” continued Ms Watson.

“To top off the meet on the Friday evening we will have the Coporate and Services 4X100m relay with several male and female teams entered. This is shaping up to be a very exciting event with teams training and preparing for the event which takes place at 7:20pm.

“The event takes place Friday June 12th at 6:00pm and Saturday June 13th at 3:00pm. Entry for adults $5.00 and children $2.00 and under 2 free. As you may or may not be aware we have had a cut back on our Government funding so have to raise funds as often as we can.

“We of course would like to thank our sponsor XL Catlin for supporting this event and allowing us to take our National Championships to another level.”
