Court: 40-Year-Old Admits Cultivating Cannabis

February 17, 2016

Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [Feb 17], a 40-year-old man admitted cultivating cannabis plants.

Mr Tio Smith pleaded guilty to five charges under the Misuse of Drugs Act. All the charges came out of a police raid on his Pembroke residence in August 2015.

Smith admitted cultivating cannabis plants; possessing grinders and a digital scale that were fitted for use with illegal substances; and possessing a blue plastic pipe that was fitted for use with the illegal substance.

The Crown Prosecutor told Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that Police found 7 cannabis plants growing outdoors under a tent, and 17 cannabis plants were found growing inside the house under a TV stand. The total weight of cannabis was 17.84 grams.

The Magistrate ordered Social Inquiry and BARC reports on Mr Smith and granted Mr Smith $3,000 bail. The Magistrate also warned Mr Smith that the grant of bail should not be interpreted as suggesting that he would not be incarcerated.

Mr Smith must return to Court in April for sentencing.
