MP Richards: ‘Who Is Speaking For The PLP’

February 7, 2016

Walter Roban is “calling for comprehensive immigration reform,” Marc Bean said there will be “no collaboration with the Government,” and Walton Brown is “calling for civil disobedience,” said Sylvan Richards, adding that “just who is speaking for the PLP is something people should ask the PLP to make clear.”

Mr Richards — the Junior Minister of Home Affairs — said, “PLP spokesman Walter Roban is calling for comprehensive immigration reform in response to the Government’s comprehensive immigration reform proposals.

“In addition, he says the PLP wants to “work with the OBA Government” in developing immigration policies going forward.

“Mr. Roban may be sincere in his words, but he is not the only person speaking for the Opposition. His leader, Mr. Marc Bean, is on record saying there will be “no collaboration” with the Government.

“And his colleague, Mr. Walton Brown who was recently fired as Shadow Minister for Home Affairs by Mr. Bean, is calling for civil disobedience on the proposals.

“Just who is speaking for the PLP is something people should ask the PLP to make clear.

“In the meantime, the Government has put forward proposals to end once and for all the piecemeal failures of UBP and PLP governments to put in place a fair and sustainable solution to the question of Bermudian status.

“The proposals will welcome into the Bermudian family people who have been part of our community for 20 years or more. They will end unjust regulations that divided families and left in limbo people who were born here or came at a very young age.

“In addition, the proposals will help Bermuda manage a serious demographic crisis that threatens our ability to support health insurance and pension plans that so many Bermudians rely on for their well being.

“The planned changes are the right thing to do – for the many people who have lived and worked alongside us for decades, for the innocent who are victimized by unfair regulations and for the Bermudian people as a whole, who will benefit from this strengthening of our social and economic fabric.”

    • Kangoocar says:

MP Richards, stop wasting your time asking anything of the plp!!! When will you guys/OBA wake up and just do what is right and stop pandering to the plp nonsense??? Get this immigration thing done and get the COI done, then get rid of the 1000 CS workers now and then get rid of another 1000 next January, then cut all other expenses to the point that we will be in a least a $150 MIILION surplus!!! Stop being nice and just do the correct thing for a change, it is getting Bermuda nowhere????

      • Build a Better Bermuda says:

The trouble with mass job cuts will be the increased requirements to various social services and other programs to support. Right now, we need more jobs on the island not less. We do need less CS, but the OBA has been going about it is the stabler fashion of attrition. As for responding to the PLP on things like this, I’m pretty sure it didn’t take up any real amount of time out the other important things they deal with, in all honesty, they could have probably written it while on the toilet.

        • Kangoocar says:

@build a better, take a look at what Barbados did, they layed off 3000 not needed CS workers in one shot, and the only thing that happened was their finances started to improve?? If we continue to borrow money to pay for NOT needed workers, we are only making our fiscal situation worse, the bleeding needs to stop or soon, none of us will have anything!! Those layed off will have to do what all others that get layed off do, either you find a job, or you start a business, it is only those with no gumption that end up at the welfare office!!! We need to stop being a socialist nanny state for people and get our fiscal house in order!!!

          • frank says:

kangoocar you are an as=====hole now we all know

          • Concerned says:

So, OBA releades half CS, people are concerned about unemployment in high numbers. What would you propose these and other folk do, head to UK, Belize. Or turn to OBA/Community for support – money spent either way, keep the workers and pay them, release them and wait to see how many will need financial assistance and housing. Damned if they do and damned if they don’t either way. Again, what is your proposal?

          • Rubber Bong says:

What you failed to mention was that Barbados had nearly 17,000 public service workers which equates to about 17%. If we cut 2000 of our 5000 wooers which equates to 40%, you’d be the first to complain that your trash pickup is 2 days late or that you had to cancel your oversees trip because your expired passport couldn’t be processed in time or that you’re still waiting for planning approval for your new extension or that there’s so many lazy people on financial assistance.

            • hmmm says:

so you would be happy with 17%????

Is that what you are saying.

  3. trisha says:

For those who have recided here 20 or more years, that is fair enough. I have friends from the carabians, Canada and from the Azores waiting for their applications to go through and these people are some of those who have actually contributed to this island economy because their MONEY stays in Bermuda and helps our local business like my own.

    • Onion juice says:

Obviously you dont go by the money shops, especially on Fridays.

      • jt says:

If you think money’s leaving now….

      • Stomp says:

Why would that surprise you that there are people at the money shops? If they are being told they have no future here, why wouldn’t you expect them to be sending any extra money home?

        • The Truth says:

Even with citizenship those from places with lower currencies will still send their monies home. We need to entice IB by citizenship not every single foreign worker.

      • Build a Better Bermuda says:

As opposed to the Bermudian player who is keeping a pad in the Dominican for a piece there (and sometimes her family) for when he takes his ‘guy’ trips with his mates while leaving wifey home to look after the kids.

      • Widget says:

@onion Juice. It that where we’ll find you. Seems you know everything about what’s going on there. Okay so where do you spend your money and do you shop overseas or spend it all in Bermuda?

      • aceboy says:

The money shops are used by the lower income workers to send funds home. That will always be happening, whether the payments are heading to the Phillipines or Jamaica.

It is the potential exodus by those who are established here and can buy homes that we need to worry about.

This is designed to keep them and their money here benefitting all of us. Even you, although you’d never admit it.

        • Onion juice says:

So if 1000 lower income workers send $500 out every week …………..

          • Come Correct says:

Here is a fact for you. PLP chased out international business yet issued more work permits than ever before. PLP put those 1000 lower income workers here to send our money out of island.

            Here’s another fact…

            Keeping pace says:

It is really disheartening to read such hateful posts. We are your sisters, brothers, mothers, school friends, employers and co-workers. Have some respect. I again challenge you to bring constructive arguments to the table and stop with all this hate speech against the body of Christ. It sincerely detracts from your cause.

You know what the similarity is between that post and your usual hateful rants? The avatar to the right of the name. Just in case everyone wanted to know what a deceitful human being you are with no substance to what you say. Is this where I end my post with LMAO?

            • Come Correct says:

Time to change your avatar again Madumbo, or do you have to submit a change request for to Alaska hall?

  4. Dangel says:

The foreign worker makes a choice to come to work in Bermuda to gain a better way of life. There is nothing wrong with that. The problem lay in that how could someone who came here on a 2 year contract still be in Bermuda 10, 15, 20 or 40 years later. As a result, this OBA government is saying that the foreign worker has been here long enough and should be granted either PRC status and/or Bermudian status. The island of Bermuda is only 21 sq miles and can only sustain a small amount of people. If the foreign workers who apply for either PATHWAY that has been obliged to them by the OBA then why not forsake your own country’s citizenship. By doing so you would be clearly indicating that Bermuda be your new Home and not just your Financial New home.

    • Dr. The Hon Edward N.Case. SFC says:

Perhaps we should tell everyone to leave after six year, yeah that would be a good idea. Oh I forgot, the idiotic PLP already did that and started our 6 year recession.

      • planeasday says:

        Ed,

Do you really believe that is what started the recession here? You are as ignorant as they come with that statement at least in regards to global economics – yes PLP policies were a small part of the exodus but the overwhelming factor was the MBS fall out beginning in 2007 – a fall out that the global economy still has not recovered from despite what MSM talking head “analysts” tell you…

I could go on and on with how this previously mentioned fall out affected business (local and international) here but it is easier to blame it on a 6 year work permit isn’t it? What are you going to say when the next recession/depression hits and there is an even greater exodus? Will you lay the blame solely at the feet of the OBA as you have just now done (in your words above) with the PLP? I think not…

Again, if you knew anything about the greater economy you could see the next fall out is staring us right in the face…and the OBA or PLP will be powerless to contain it.

        • Ed Case says:

Think what you will about the world recession Plane-as, but our problems are largely due to the complete ineptitude and stupidity of the PLP.

The next fallout is in fact staring at us – you are correct. But again, the stupidity and ineptitude of the PLP will be our downfall.

    • Widget says:

@Dangel. Blah Blah Blah, 21 square miles Blah Blah Blah. These people have put there hearts and souls into this country and have considered Bermuda home for over 20 plus years, not to mention there children know no other country but Bermuda. Honesty have you know heart.

  5. Disgusted says:

Mr. Richards, you are a disgusting embarrassment to Bermuda and its people. I for one who schooled with you at WA are wondering whether you have suffered some demise. Your actions are shameful and for whatever reason do you continue to wag your tail behind Minister Fahy’s non Bermudian policies, I am perplexed and forever disgusted. But it will be your descendants that will see what disgrace you have bought to own once proud birthplace. You and your OBA partners are taking this country of all its assets and selling them off. Someday soon you will have to answer to the people … Especially the politricks of selling off Bermuda. Shameful, disgusting and definitely not in the best interest of Bermuda and its birthright descendants. Who are you speaking for ?

    • Hmmm says:

You are describing the PLP, yet bashing SR. Weird. PLP sold us to foreign investors.

      • PRC's are your current neighbours says:

The PLP sold Bermuda to foreign lenders a long time ago…our options will be forever limited because of that and now that the chickens are coming home to roost people are complaining and screaming. Too bad you didn’t do that when all the spending was happening right under your nose.

        • planeasday says:

          PRC’s are your current neighbours…

Every dollar issued into the economy comes with debt. That policy has been in place here long before the PLP…when the government goes to the BMA for the BDA dollars that probably in your pocket they write IOU’s essentially…you want to know where our debt goes? I suggest you start your search at the Bermuda Monetary Authority…

          • serengeti says:

You really have no idea what you’re talking about do you.

            • Jus' Wonderin' says:

They obviously don’t or else they wouldn’t spell plain as plane lmfao….

    • mj says:

Disgusted —-I agree, Sylvan acting strange, talking strange and quite frankly oba are always using some plp for an excuse not to own up to what they have or have not done..Mr. Richards what about that land being up for sale in dockyard? what about the southshore apartments, seem like the old ubp did the same thing with the bases, destroyed them to an unliveable standard before they told bermudians that they were uninhabitable but yet they were okay for the usa guys..Also don’t worry about who is speaking for the plp. THEY ARE NOT IN POWER!!!! for all of you education you are coming of like some idiot running behind people that are not our people, true colours showing Sylvan Richards!you prefer a proselyte to your own, tsk tsk tsk!

  6. Unbelievable says:

Haha well done MP Richards. I agree too. Will the real PLP leader please stand up!

    hahah

      People without a clue –
but Real Bermudians can’t wait for the next election

      • hmmm says:

To show they are not STUPID and swayed by the decit lies and misinformation of the PLP.

PLP propaganda assumes Bermudians are unintelligent.

      • hmmm says:

Real intelligent Bermudians know which side their bread is buttered on and will vote for OBA..

They are helping rescue this country one day at a time for all of out futures.

      • Build a Better Bermuda says:

What heritage is that, the one where for the last 400 years people have been coming to this country to make it their home, and some have been leaving too.

    • Navin Pooty Tang Johnson says:

A better question who does the PLP speak for? after there term I cannot imagine how they could even show their faces

  10. Vulcan Trash Cleaner says:

Walton Brown is “calling for civil disobedience,”

If he starts something this time he and his cohorts will be the first casualty,it wont be anything like last time, people are not scared of you and your demanding ways!

    • Rhonda says:

people power is always greater than the most well oiled political machine.

I wonder if the oba professionals, told them they would get a thrashing at the bye election..

      • SMH@gmail.com says:

…and you want the PLP back in Government because they did such a great job? They left the island in such great shape and improved the lives of the average person?

  11. rhonda says:

Thank goodness the plp has many voices…

Who is the OBA dictator. Fahy

    • Ringmaster says:

@Rhonda. Dictator? These are proposals, not even close to the legislation that the PLP sprung on Bermudians overnight preventing them buying property without a license and fee if they were married to non Bermudians. That was law made without any consultation at all, and talk about being anti Bermudian.

      • Rhonda says:

As a person married to a non Bermudian and having had myself gone through the licensing process, it left little to be desired. The two years wait and cost associated was unacceptable.

but I agree with the concept, we had to know what portion of our land is outright in foreign ownership or potentially can fall in foreign ownership.

All of which the oba has left us exposed.

        • jt says:

Well you might agree with a reduction to your rights as a Bermudian married to a non-Bermudian but most felt it stunk to high heaven and that the rational behind the legislation was far more covert than you describe.

    • hmmm says:

The PLP has many sides of their mouth that they talk out of.

Fahy isn’t a dictator, the guy is working hard for Bermudians every day.

He may look a little nerdy, but credit to the guy, he is working hard for us all.

      • SMH@gmail.com says:

I think Fahy is the best Minister this island has ever had. He’s not afraid to make the tough decisions and do the right this and tells it like it is. Things have improved under his watch and he’s reversed some decisions after listening to the people. This country could use a lot more Fahys. Too made he’s not Minister of Public works also

    • Build a Better Bermuda says:

Yes, and we’ve seen how MarcBean treats those other voices… Minister Fahy is the immigration minister, so it falls to him to review and develop this comprehensive immigration reform, which is what he is doing, and in the smart way of reviewing each area at a time to give each area the focus it needs. Haven’t seen one idea or suggestion from the PLP voices about what they want in immigration reform.

  12. watching says:

Oh please! Anyone who has heard Sylvan speak for the OBA in the House of Assembly should realize he has no clue nor understanding about 90% of the legislation that he has had to table on behalf of his government.

  13. Average Bermudian says:

AT LEAST 25,000 BERMUDIANS CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT ELECTION

TO REMOVE THESE PEOPLE FROM GOVERNMENT – THE WHOLE LOT OF THEM

    SELL OUTS

    • Jus' Wonderin' says:

And you honestly think half the people in the PLP/UBP actually care about the little man (YOU). Let me school you…..THEY WANT YOUR VOTES SO THEY CAN TAKE YOUR (OUR) MONEY AGAIN!!

    • hmmm says:

PLP sold this island…HSBC, Tuckers SDO, nearly the Waterfront, Whites island, and the financial wellbeing of this whole country to overseas investors.

We are more intelligent than you make us out to be. The PLP are destruction and decay, with misinformation and lies.

You think they are working for you from buzz words and divisive rants, but they are not or they wouldn’t need to use them and could run on their record and achievements. They can’t …end of.

maybe you are a sucker, maybe you’ll wake up and realize they are taking you for a sucker !

  14. Average Bermudian says:

Notice that the Bda business executive who is shot in his home in the suburbs in England over the weekend.

Yet he has all the same rights of born bermudians in bermuda.

What a joke these oba politicians are with this immigration policy.
