If you was working in Bahamas they would have fired you but in Bermuda we give you a bonus & people wonder why certain Ministers go on a $30,000 6 day trip.

    • Family Man says:

Bermuda area in square miles – 20
Bahamas area in square miles – 5,358

      Tourists per square mile:
      Bermuda – 1,165
      Bahamas – 146

In Bahamas you deserve to be fired.
In Bermuda your critics need to go back to school.

      • JAWS says:

What size has to do with anything did that stop America’s Cup from coming here. Of all the lies I’ve heard, “I LOVE YOU” was my favorite. Voting and trusting the OBA was my 2nd favorite.

        • Spit Bouy says:

          Jaws,

          Talk about Duh!!

Now go play with your crayons please, adults are discussing things here.

          • White Cedar says:

Same adults that’s going to vote the oba out. The writing is on the wall some of you fail to see it. The voters that help the oba win by not voting are showing up in force next election.

            • Spit Bouy says:

              White Cedar,

Well that’s how politics works and it wont change even if the PLP are voted back in. Those same ‘adults’ will vote them back out again one day. Try not to cry too hard when that happens OK?!. LOL

      • The Original Truth™ says:

        Monaco – 0.78 square miles

        Monaco visitors 2015 – 28,000

In Monaco they hire a person who’s biggest success was in tourism.

In Bermuda we hire a person who’s biggest success was in charity.

        • The Original Truth™ says:

          OOPS Typo!

          Monaco visitors 2015 – 28,0000

With so many zeros it’s hard to keep track.

          • Warwick Pond skink says:

Still not right… you do the books for the previous regime!!

      • Spit Bouy says:

        Family Man,

        Exactly!

    • Nanny Pat says:

Dumbest comment ever – even without the grammatical errors. Compare sizes, prices and number of hotels. Dude, you dumbed up the Internet today. Kardashian much?

      • The Original Truth™ says:

OBA has compared our tourism market to the caribbean numerous times so you should call them out on dumbness as well. I agree with you about the prices but size should not be a comparison at all. There are loads places smaller than us that do better. As a price comparison there are loads places more expensive than us that do better.

        Monaco – 0.78 square miles

        Monaco visitors 2015 – 28,0000

BTW using Kardashian as a figure of dumbness is just as dumb. I’m sure that everyone of the Kardashians are a lot more well off than you’d ever be.

    • Rumsoak says:

Apples and oranges , but you will never know how the world works .

      • Rumsoak says:

p.s. They have a much better airport .

      • The Original Truth™ says:

Where does the OBA go to do their tourism research again? Maybe they also need to be shown the difference between apples and oranges.

    • NCM says:

So the Bahamas had a 7.8% increase vs a 15.4% increase in Bermuda. I would say that’s pretty good. And we are not the Bahamas. Eyes wide open but clearly brain not functioning…

    • Guy says:

Whoa. The level of pure ignorance is astounding.
Please tell me you realize that in this example the percentage increase for Bermuda is FAR more impressive than the percentage increase for Bahamas.
In your example Bermuda is winning, you imbecile!
      I just can’t. Smh

      • The Original Truth™ says:

That’s because Bahamas had the larger cruise ships arriving on their shores a long time before us. Our main increase is because of these ships. We are not winning we are only catching up which isn’t impressive at all. Big difference is that most tourist on the cruises get off and spend in Bahamas. Many of the passengers get off the ships in Bermuda and look at the prices and then get straight back on and don’t spend a penny.

        • Spit Bouy says:

The Original Truth, “… before us. Our main increase is because of these ships”. Really are you sure about that?

Mr Hanbury noted an additional 3,515 tourists flew to the island this year compared to the same period in 2015 — an increase of 17.4 per cent — while the number of cruise visitors increased by 5 per cent.

“It’s hard to go up 5 per cent in cruise visitors because we are pretty much at capacity, but we did it,” he said.

OOps, so Truth.. Want to try again? LMAO

    • Zevon says:

      What a moron.

      • The Original Truth™ says:

Talk about the pot calling the kettle…………

    • Crickets says:

Eyes wide open – you must have pink eye. Your way of thinking is amazing! So why not compare Bahamas to Australia??? If you chose to use your method of thinking it should be fine. They are both islands. The Bahamas is a very convenient 30 minute flight from the USA and many other islands. So if you are not happy \with todays numbers you must have been thrilled with the LOWER numbers posted by the previous government. Not happy with the money spent to go to Rio? Okay so I will give you that, but where were your comments when your former minister of tourism and premier took a ride on the private jet of the Globalhue owber before awarding that company a huge multi million dollar advertising contract. Oh wait, it gets better, it was awarded to Globalhue again, despite dismal tourism numbers and WITHOUT going to tender.

    • Build a Better Bermuda says:

So you are trying to compare our tourism industry with theirs??? So in doing so you’ve tried to ignore the fact that they have at least 250 times the square mileage that we do, which means they have at least 250 times the capacity we do, meaning they should be able to accommodate 250 times the tourist we can. But, as your math points out, they don’t. They are also more equatorial, so they can have pretty much a year round tourism industry. They have newer and better airports than us right now, and they are able to provide cheaper hotel rate than us, primarily because they pretty well pay pennies to our dollar in wages to the majority of their hospitality staff… and for that matter most other industry employees too. This is also maintained by the help of low construction standards that results in huge property damages from hurricanes and other storms… and higher mortality rates due to those storms.

      • Spit Bouy says:

        Build a Better Bermuda.

Careful, you’ll overload him/her with facts and pure common sense.

  3. The Kid says:

Nice going OBA…. what an excellent achievement…. keep em going up

  4. Jadon says:

This must be because the OBA/UBP got back into power ? Or maybe because the worldwide recession is finally deminishing…. oh wait I forgot the WORLDWIDE recession was caused by the PLP I forgot lol!!! PLP is one powerful party to have caused the worldwide recession lol

    • Truthhertz says:

      Worldwide recession?

      Jesus you guys are reaching.

Kinda sad and pathetic, but funny at the same time.

Name just one of our trading partners whose economy contracting for 6 consecutive years.

If you don’t understand a subject save yourself the embarrassment by not commenting.

    • Zevon says:

The “worldwide recession” was over by 2009. Everything else here was self-inflicted by Cox, Burt, Bean.

    • Spit Bouy says:

      Jadon,

Still preaching that ignorance are you? Well one thing for sure, we likely wouldn’t have seen this increase at this time under the PLP. LOL

It’s obviously pointless attempting to enlighten you as you’re clearly incapable of understanding. Comments like that suggest you posses intellect more apt to discussing the Telly Tubby’s rather than adult issues. Thanks for the laugh today though.

    • Can't have it both Ways says:

Jadon, if the recession is what affected Tourism and the PLP government was aware of that, then why the F would they be so irresponsible with our money. Why spend on projects without knowing how you would pay for it!

By the way, al countries were not equally affected by recession. Some countries in Europe suffered while others prospered. Some countries in the Americas and the Caribbean did well while other suffered.

What was the common denominator? Those countries that had crooked governments and those countries that overspent and borrowed without knowing how they would pay for it, suffered. Those countries that were more conservative, saved a bit and didn’t borrow before knowing how they could pay for what they borrowed – did okay.

Did the USA & Canada suffer the same – NO!
Did Spain and Finland suffer the same – No!

You can’t have it both ways.

    • Can't have it both Ways says:

      Jadon,

Maybe you should look and who was awarded our Tourism contracts during those years. You should research what Premier took a ride on the companies private jet before awarding that contract. Then ask the question how is it that Globalhue was awarded that contract a second time without the contract going out to tender? The reason some within the PLP gave, was that they had produced excellent results? Is their results were so great then why were their numbers down.

You see Jadon, most of us don’t just read the headline. We read the whole story and then do some research. Maybe you should do the same and research Globalhues contract, the personal relationship with the former Premier and the Jet ride they took together.

Report back here with your findings please.

      • Toodle-oo says:

Kinda puts all that faux outrage over ‘Jetgate’ , a non incident , into perspective doesn’t it ?

Amazing how people who go around accusing others of not knowing their history have no clue about recent events THEIR party are guilty of .

  5. JUNK YARD DOG says:

As we are doing so well we don’t need a new airport.

All our tourists want to do is get off the plane and get to their 2 star accommodations as some have been traveling for over 6 + hours.
