Police: 63-Year-Old Man Dies Following Collision

[Updated: Police confirm the male rental cycle rider, believed be a 63-year-old man, has died]

At around 5pm today [June 19] emergency services attended a collision on South Road in Devonshire near Turk’s Head Lane, and traffic is being diverted away from the scene until further notice.

A police spokesperson said, “Around 5pm today [Monday, June 19th] police and first responders were dispatched to a reported collision on South Road in Devonshire near Turk’s Head Lane involving a car and a rental cycle.

“Details are limited. However, initial information suggests that the male rental cycle rider sustained serious injuries and was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment.

“An update on the injured rider’s condition will be provided in due course. Traffic is being diverted away from the scene until further notice and inquiries are underway.

“Any witnesses are asked to contact the main police telephone number 295-0011.”

Update 6.32pm: Police have confirmed that the “male rental cycle rider was later pronounced dead at the hospital,” and said an updated statement will be released shortly.

Update 7.46pm: The police said the rider, believed be a 63-year-old man, was traveling with a young female pillion passenger, believed to be a 10-year-old girl, when the collision occurred. The male visitor was pronounced dead at the hospital, and the young female visitor is receiving treatment for her injuries.

A police spokesperson said, “Around 5pm today [Monday, June 19th] police and first responders were dispatched to a reported two vehicle collision on South Road in Devonshire near the junction with Brimstone Hill involving a rental cycle and a car.

“Details remain limited. However, it appears that the rider, believed be a 63-year-old man, was traveling with a young female pillion passenger, believed to be a 10-year-old girl, when the collision occurred.

“Both were injured and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance. The male visitor was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

“No further information regarding the deceased will be provided at this time, until his next of kin have been notified.

“At last check the young female visitor was receiving treatment for her injuries and an update on her condition will be given in due course.

“Traffic diversions were in effect at the junctions of Tee Street and Brighton Hill Road while the relevant police personnel examined the scene.

“A full investigation into this fatal collision, the seventh for 2017, is underway and any witnesses are asked to contact the Roads Policing Unit on 247-1788.”
