BUEI Set To Present Four Events In April

March 31, 2018

The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute’s [BUEI] is getting set to present four events, including “The Final Frontier: Space-Age Technology, Deep-Sea Exploration and Shipwrecks” with Dr. James P. Delgado on Thursday, April 5 at 7.30pm, “A Street Cat Named Bob” on Thursday, April 12 at 7.30am, “Submergence” on Sunday, April 15 at 5.15pm, and “Into the Blue” with Lori King on Thursday, April 19 at 7.30pm.

Regarding the “The Final Frontier: Space-Age Technology, Deep-Sea Exploration and Shipwrecks,” the event poster says, “Since the 1985 discovery of Titanic, the art and science of deep-sea research has opened the planet’s final frontier – the ocean – to new discoveries and also to a new method of conducting science and involving the public.

“Using the concept of “telepresence,” scientists have worked around the world, discovering marine life in all depths, undersea geology, and a wide array of shipwrecks from throughout history. Dr. Delgado will share tales of the technology, the science, and of missions he has led or participated in from Titanic, World War ll wrecks in the Pacific, and the telepresence enabled deep sea archaeological excavation of an early 19th century shipwreck in the Gulf of Mexico.”

The presentation will get underway at 7.30pm, with dinner at Harbourfront opening at 6.00pm.

Tickets cost $20 for members, $25 for non-members and $10 for students, and are available by calling 294-0204 or visiting BUEI’s Oceans Gift Shop.

Regarding the “A Street Cat Named Bob,” the event poster says, “Join us for a special screening of “A Street Cat Named Bob”. Based on the international best-selling book, this is the beautiful true story of a man and a cat, both getting second chances.

“James Bowen, a busker and recovering drug addict, had his life transformed when he met a stray ginger cat he named “Bob”. The film stars Luke Treadaway as James and features the real “Bob” playing himself!”

Tickets cost $20 for members, $25 for non-members and $10 for students, and are available by calling 294-0204 or visiting BUEI’s Oceans Gift Shop.

On the “Submergence,” the event poster says, “James [James McAvoy] is a British agent under the cover of a water engineer, while Danny [Alicia Vikander] is a bio-mathematician working on a deep-sea diving project to explore the origin of life on our planet.

On a chance encounter in a remote resort in Normandy where they both prepare for their respective missions, they fall rapidly, and unexpectedly, into each other’s arms and a deliriously wild love affair develops, even though their jobs are destined to separate them.

Danny sets off on a perilous quest to dive to the bottom of the ocean. James’s assignment takes him to Somalia, where he is sucked into a geopolitical vortex that puts him in grave danger. Both characters are subject to different kinds of isolation as they pine for each other; their determination to reconnect becomes as much an existential journey as a love story.”

Tickets cost $15 for adults and $12 for students, and are available by calling 294-0204 or visiting BUEI’s Oceans Gift Shop.

BUEI SCREENS Apr 15

For “Into the Blue,” the event poster says, “Join Lori King and her crew as they bring the audience along the retelling of her swim around the Island on June 15-16, 2016. King will lead the discussion with crew members giving their perspectives on some of the more memorable, sometimes tense, moments on the water while the Island, itself, was gearing up for the start of Heroes weekend.

“Learn just how important the sea, itself, is when planning and executing such a swim and find out what motivates someone to want to swim for 21 hours straight.”

The presentation will get underway at 7.30pm, with dinner at Harbourfront opening at 6.00pm.

Tickets cost $20 for members, $25 for non-members and $10 for students, and are available by calling 294-0204 or visiting BUEI’s Oceans Gift Shop.
