Armstrong Warned Parents of “Hostile Atmosphere”

March 18, 2010

A British newspaper has reported that recently released British ex-pat Luke Armstrong asked his parents not to travel to Bermuda for his appeal, warning them of a “hostile atmosphere”. The article also appears to state that Luke Armstrong is still in Bermuda at this time.

Luke Armstrong was originally convicted of causing the death of Winston Burrows, and had his conviction and sentence overturned earlier this week and walked free.

In Nov 2009 the jury found him guilty of causing “death by dangerous driving” in the August 2009 crash, and sentenced him to 15 months in prison.

The Appeal Court’s reasoning for the reversal this week was that the judge did not correctly direct the jury on the definition of ‘death by dangerous driving’.

The Scunthorpe Telegraph’s report states that “Mr and Mrs Armstrong did not travel to Bermuda for the appeal after being warned by their son they could face a hostile atmosphere“. It goes on to detail the celebrations by “20 to 30″ people in his local town in England.
