$12,000 in Prizes for Student Mural Contest

April 13, 2010

Middle school students are painting Bermuda’s longest urban public art exhibit on Pitts Bay Road for a chance to win $12,000 in school prizes.

The work is the result of a painting challenge conducted this spring in all middle schools by The Green Family and Berco Ltd, with coordination from the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art.

A grand prize of $5,000 will be awarded to the first place winner with a grant of $2,000 to the second place and $1,000 to third. Every school participating will be awarded $500 with all prizes provided by The Green Family and Berco Ltd. An awards reception will be held at the Masterworks Museum in May.

The painting began today, with 11 schools in total taking part over the entire three days.

Schools selected to exhibit their work are: Bermuda High School For Girls, Clearwater, Dellwood, The Education Centre, Learning Express Academy, Mount Saint Agnes Academy, Saltus, Sandys, Somersfield Academy, T. N.Tatem and The Whitney Institute.

We spoke with Sandys Middle School art teacher Barbara Dillas, who explained that the theme of the murals was “Bermuda, My Home”, with students designing the murals themselves, depicting aspects of their daily lives.
