Rise Above Bermuda: Good Friday Part II
[Update Apr 9: We just got word that this event is cancelled due to the scheduling of Kimwandae Walker’s funeral for the same day] In an initative by the community action group ‘Rise Above Bermuda’ there will be a ‘new’ Good Friday held this Sunday April 11, from 2pm – 7pm at the Victor Scott school field.
The tragic events of Good Friday are well known; the broad daylight shooting murder of 35 year old Kimwandae Walker in front of numerous children, including his own 9 yr old son, and 4 yr old daughter.
Rise Above says they are giving back to young people what was taken on Good Friday. They say they want to send a very clear message: “We still believe in the Good in our community, we believe in the Good in us, we believe in the Good in you.”
They are looking for everyone from the neighbourhood and community to come out and enjoy a day of fun, no speeches, no talk… just fun.
There will be a number of fun activities for the children provided 100% free including; fun castles, food, egg hunts, running races, face painting, and more. Security will be in place.
The concept is to send a message that good law abiding citizens will not be scared away, and to show that the community supports the children of the area, as well as the entire student body of the Victor Scott school.
A Rare Personal Addition:
On a personal note [which we generally stay away from, but the extreme events have caused us to break that rule] the staff of Bernews will be in attendance [as private citizens] and we encourage locals to come out and show support for this event. Practically all of Bermuda was horrified by the events of Good Friday, so please consider stopping by – even for 5 mins – to show the criminal element that we as the wider community stand united against them. There will be security, and please think – if you as an adult are scared to go there, how do we expect the 5, 6 and 7 year old kids to attend school there?
Update April 9, Statement from Rise Above:
Rise Above Bermuda, after consultation with members of the community have made a decision to postpone Sunday’s Family Fun Day as it will conflict with the Funeral of Kimwandae Walker which will be talking place on Sunday at 4pm. As a community based organization we are sensitive to the critical issues that affect “US” thus we thought it fitting to make the change.
We will consult with area residents will comeback with a new day and time for the Family fun day.
We regret any inconvience this may have caused.
