Another Pedestrian Struck By Motor Vehicle

May 5, 2010

Yesterday, a 59 year old Warwick woman was struck by a taxi while walking across the pedestrian crossing at the junction of Front Street and Parliament Street.

The taxi was turning from Front Street on to Parliament Street when the collision occurred.

The lady sustained bruising and pain to her body, and was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment and later released. The driver, a 52 year old St. George’s man, was not injured and the taxi was not damaged.

Reports of pedestrians being struck by motor vehicles are not unusual, with two fatalities this year. 41 yr old Andre Hendrickson was fatally struck by a car and on April 17. Three months after the initial accident in which he was struck by a motorbike while walking, 69 year old Derek Smith died on April 24.

In two cases this year involving children who thankfully weren’t seriously hurt, a 10 yr old boy was struck by a motorbike while walking across a pedestrian crossing on March 19, and a 12 yr old boy was hit by a car on April 27.

On a positive note, the Bermuda Police Service has stated they would like to commend the actions of two men who were passing by at the time and assisted the victim.

Police have asked for any witnesses to this collision to contact PC Yvette Henry on 295-0011.
