Located across from Arnold’s Tile on Mill Reach Lane in Pembroke, Island Self Storage held an invitation only pre-launch in April, and opened its doors to the general public earlier this month. Some 30% of the facility’s units have already been rented out.

The climate-controlled, 16,000 square foot facility has back-up emergency power and offers clients 24-hour access with a personalised access code. The high-security facility is monitored 24 hours per day by video surveillance. The facility offers Bermuda’s largest freight elevator, with a capacity of 8,000 pounds, for moving large items.

Storage units are available for both residential and commercial use. There is also a wine storage area, which has its own separate climate control system.

Island Self Storage say that they have invested in one of the first advanced dehumidification systems in Bermuda, and that humidity will be kept at optimum levels, providing the ultimate safeguard for customers’ valuables. Temperature and humidity levels will be maintained to minimise the possibility of mould developing. The facility’s back-up emergency power will ensure that the low humidity environment is maintained in the event of power interruptions.

“We have had a huge amount of interest from residential clients, who are interested in storing their winter clothes, their recreational equipment, or their furniture while they are renovating their home or traveling for an extended period,” says Island Self Storage CEO Glen Smith, who has partnered with Don Mackenzie to open the business. “On the corporate side, our clients include two restaurants and a small publishing company. Both are looking for somewhere to store inventory. We have even had a band rent a unit so that they can keep their equipment somewhere safe and dry.”

“We are offering something new in the market – a climate-controlled facility in a central location, just five minutes from Hamilton – and both residential and corporate clients have been very enthusiastic”, says Operations Manager Lynn Cordon, who is assisted by Customer Service Representative Anna Mackenzie.
