Police Warn Locals Over Yellow Pages

May 26, 2010

The Police have issued a warning to the public in reference to “Island Yellow Pages” saying:

Bermuda Police Service Financial Crime Unit is once again receiving complaints from members of the public in relation to a company called ‘The Island Yellow Pages’.

Recently local residents have been contacted by a representative of the Island Yellow Pages to purchase advertising space – believing that they were purchasing advertisement space in the Bermuda Yellow Pages.

However, the Island Yellow Pages are not affiliated with the Bermuda Yellow Pages in any way. They are based in the U.S. Virgin Islands and accordingly are not answerable to the laws of Bermuda.

The Bermuda Police Service would like to remind members of the public to ascertain the identity of any person or company prior to entering into any type of financial agreement with them.

The Bermuda Police Service Financial Crime Unit can be contacted on 295-0011.

Island Yellow Pages have been reported as operating unscrupulously for a number of years. The callers are reported to contact individuals during the renewal process for our local yellow pages, identify themselves as the “yellow pages” giving the impression they are Bermuda based.

The other end of it is is when they start sending faxes etc. demanding money, for an advert you didn’t place with them saying they will be taking you to court. I remember seeing one of these about 4 years ago and reporting it to the fraud team. I’ll have to say they a persistent bunch.
