August 27, 2010

244234_asbestosThe Commissioner of Education would like to inform members of the Clearwater Middle School family that while recently preparing for the 2010/2011 academic year, asbestos has been discovered in the ceiling within an isolated area in the kitchen.

Remediation is currently underway to address this. Senior officials from the Department of Education will be making a site visit to Clearwater Middle School on Monday August 30th, and the results of air quality testing in the aforementioned area will be received shortly thereafter. The purpose of this testing is to ensure that there are no airborne materials in the area.

The Department of Education says they are committed to ensuring that Clearwater Middle School is a healthy environment for all of its occupants. At this point, the school will be opening as planned on September 8th and should there be any change the Department of Education says an announcement will be made accordingly.

So the Commissioner of Education reveals there is a possiblity of Asbestos in a school that was constructed over 40 years ago.

    Great.

What about the houses that were taken over from the “Bases” that were upgraded et al and sold to Bermudians.

Were they rid of Asbestos that they contained?

    Thanks Bernews.

The base housing was updated in the early 1990′s. I remember living there and we had to move into temporary housing while the asbestos was removed.

Just great! What happens to the children that ate in the cafeteria would they require any kind of testing. Well at least someone is doing their job and found it before school goes back in. Let’s hope its rectified in time.

I think what’s more important here than giving in to the hysteria is to be informed about the reality of the situation. Flooring often contains asbestos. But, so long as it’s not breaking into POWDER, it is emphatically NOT a threat. We aren’t informed as to where the asbestos was found, in what application, etc- so it might well be that it was in a floor tile, or something as relatively inert. As a little side note, TONS of public funds have been spent in the past on unnecessary asbestos remediation, as a reaction to public hysteria. If it’s intact, it should be left undisturbed. I for one would be most interested in specifically where the asbestos was. I’m not for a moment suggesting that asbestos isn’t dangerous, but if it were as scary as hype would have it, we would all have mesothelioma. I can almost guarantee that it’s in every building built before 1970- in schools, church halls, community centers, public offices…Please let’s be educated, informed, and critically thinking about what we see in the press. Apart from Bernews, they almost always get it wrong or inflate it out of proportion.

As a former student in the school from Fall of ’73 to Spring of ’76, I’m grateful and relieved that it was confined to where it was. But I do worry about the cafeteria ladies that used to work there when I attended school. With the base closure, I’d guess that there’s no way to trace back and contact them/their families to notify them of any potential hazard.

And again, I have to re-iterate…we have no idea exactly where the asbestos was found nor in what condition. Please, please let us NOT encourage people to conjecture about illnesses, etc. You have no idea what I’ve seen in my career as a facilities manager, where I’ve seen people blame their diabetes comes from exposure to fluorescent lights instead of their own sloth and gluttony- because some nutter has seeded their mind with such a ridiculous possibility, or that a moldy environment is definitively responsible for their arthritis. Please let’s get all the facts, then let’s draw conclusions. Not saying you have crossed any lines, but just be mindful…the article said that it was in an isolated area, so again- it would be useful to the public to know where, and in what application- was it insulation in a ceiling void? Floor tile? Mastic?
