Still No News: Bermudians on Missing Boat
Days after the US Coast Guard called off the search for the 31-foot yacht “Carefree IV”, the boat has still not been located.
Officials have confirmed that there are two Bermudians on board, however have declined to officially name them or provide further information on them.
Bermuda’s Rescue Co-ordination Center confirmed this morning [Dec 28] that they have still not made contact, nor located the vessel.
Officials say that Radio notices are still being broadcast to passing vessels to keep a lookout, and that officials are in communications with Carribean authorities just in case the yacht decided to head back to its originating point.
“Carefree IV” has not been seen since December 18. The 31-foot yacht left the Dominican Republic on December 1 and had been due to arrive in Bermuda before Christmas. Last week a Coast Guard spokesperson said the crew requested assistance because they had run out of food, water and gasoline. “On Wednesday, RCC Bermuda diverted a merchant vessel whose crew was able to supply the two sailors with 60 gallons of water and enough food for 7 to 10 days. They were unable to provide any gasoline.”
Until calling off the search on December 24, a U.S. Coastguard C-130 aircraft had conducted an aerial search for the missing boat, covering an area of 19,000 square miles to the East and Southeast of Bermuda.
