  1. on reid st every day asking for money like $10 from people!!!

    • Captain obvious says:

And…..have you done anything to help him? Another useless comment by you. We all know what these guys do and most of us dont like it. But you offer little by way of a solution except your classic ‘Lock him up and thru (spelling btw) away the key’ nonsense. That’s not ‘activism’ – that’s ‘reactionism’. If he has entered a home and assaulted someone – then he needs to be severely punished. However, we reap what we sow – all these guys begging on the street that so offend your sensibilities Mr Spanswick, have issues that will not go away by themselves. They may have mental problems or issues with addiction – the fact remains that they will get worse, and do worse things until someone steps in and tries to help them with their issues. So a guy gets locked up for begging – he cant afford to pay the fine, then he gets locked up on a warrant and does his time (at our expense) then he comes out and does it again, and again and again. Believe me – that costs a hell of a lot more than the $10 he may be asking you for. It is a downward spiral for these guys and eventually their desperation WILL affect us by way of the crimes they commit.

But dont you worry about that – just cross the street when you see them coming….

Which begs the question Captain … what have you done for him?

If this is the person I’m thinking he is , and I’m pretty sure that he is , when I first came face to face with him begging about a year ago I knew that he was a time bomb just ticking away. There was a streak in him not like most of the other ‘street people’ in town.

Why didn’t his family have him institutionalised ?

  3. Malachi says:

    yep, that’s him.

I have noticed that the “art” of begging has reached new levels. Take a walk thru Hamilton any day of the week and there are probably a half a dozen “career beggars” who ask for specific amounts, usually $10 or $20.

I lost my job in the insurance sector more than a year ago and I am seriously considering becoming a street beggar.

From what I see, it appears to be a lucrative occupation.
