WSJ: Enjoy Bermuda’s Vintage Bargains

January 8, 2011

1_Lafite_Label_1999_mNo bargains to be found in Bermuda? The “Wall Street Journal’s” distinguished wine blogger Will Lyons begs to disagree.

An award-winning Scottish journalist and wine expert who also contributes to “Reader’s Digest” and “The Spectator Business”, Mr. Lyons reported on a recent vacation on the island this week.

He said while his handicap is such he had difficulty making his way around Bermuda’s golf courses, he had no problem negotiating the “impressive” wine lists at various local restaurants — finding some relative steals in the process.

Mr. Lyons admits he “skipped past” the Château Lafite Rothschild 1999, priced on the list at $550 a bottle at the Harbourfront Restaurant on East Broadway.

“Even so, that is still some way behind the enormous prices Lafite is now achieving for that vintage at auction,” he said. “A quick thumbnail comparison puts the equivalent London retail price at more than $1,000 a bottle for the ‘99.”
