Percy Jackson And The Bermuda Triangle
The Bermuda Triangle is suddenly one of the hottest properties in Hollywood, with producers seemingly confident audiences won’t disappear when a slew of upcoming films set in the mythical region open at cinemas.
Jack Black’s reimagining of the classic “Gulliver’s Travels” was set in the waters off Bermuda, a source of mystery, intrigue and unbridled speculation since Christopher Columbus first sailed through the area in the late 15 century.
And in recent weeks it’s been reported that superstars Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt are both working on adventure fantasy projects which take place in the Bermuda Triangle.
Now the “Los Angeles Times” say another major film set in the Bermuda Triangle — an area of ocean bounded by Bermuda, Florida and Puerto Rico where paranormal and extraterrestrial forces have been blamed for the disappearances of ships and aircraft — is currently in pre-production.
A Bermuda Triangle-themed sequel to the 2010 box office hit ”Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” — which mixed Classic Greek mythology with modern adventure and teenage soap operatics — is currently being scripted and is likely to go before the cameras this summer.
The film could be released as early as next summer although producers 20th Century Fox declined to officially comment on the production.
Adapted from the second book in Rick Riordan’s five-part series, “Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters” will take the titular teenage hero — who has discovered he is the son of the Greek god Poseidon and that many elements of Greek mythology still exist in the modern world — on a quest into the Bermuda Triangle to find both the legendary Golden Fleece and a friend who disappeared there.
“After a summer spent trying to prevent a catastrophic war among the Greek gods, Percy Jackson finds his seventh-grade school year unnervingly calm: but things don’t stay quiet for long,” says the book’s official synopsis. “Percy soon discovers there is trouble at Camp Half-Blood: the magical borders which protect Half-Blood Hill have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and the only safe haven for demigods is on the verge of being overrun by mythological monsters.
“To save the camp, Percy needs the help of his best friend, Grover, who has been taken prisoner by the Cyclops Polyphemus on an island somewhere in the Sea of Monsters — the dangerous waters Greek heroes have sailed for millennia — only today, the Sea of Monsters goes by a new name: the Bermuda Triangle. Now Percy and his friends must retrieve the Golden Fleece from the Island of the Cyclops by the end of the summer or Camp Half-Blood will be destroyed. But first, Percy will learn a stunning new secret about his family — one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon’s son is an honor or simply a cruel joke …”
According to the “Los Angeles Times” all of the principal cast from the first Percy Jackson film — headed by Logan Lerman as the title character – will be returning for the sequel.
Aimed at teens and young adults, the Percy Jackson books have spent more than three years on the “New York Times” bestseller list and the first film grossed more than $220 million at the global box office.
