March 26, 2011

bom logoIf you have a desire for baked goods or need your car cleaned today [Mar.26] – you can solve those two issues and help a good cause at the same time, as Bermuda Overseas Missions is hosting a car wash and bake sale today, to raise funds for a trip to Zambia to build houses for orphans affected by AIDS.

The car wash is at B&V across from BAA from 9am-3pm, and the cost is $20. In addition there will be baked goods on sale.

Over the last 8 years they have organized 10 trips to take students and adults abroad to help build houses in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, Global Village programme. They have built in countries including Bolivia; Botswana; Romania; Brazil; Guatemala; El Salvador; Honduras; Mexico; Colombia. To date they have helped to construct over 50 houses providing homes to more than 300 people.

David Thompson of BOM said, “We focus on student participation especially as we want to give our students the opportunity to experience firsthand what life is like in countries that experience serious need and families desperate for decent affordable housing. They get a chance to meet and get to know the families as well as work alongside them as the families must contribute sweat equity to the construction of the houses.”

“What does Bermuda benefit from this? We give our youth and the leaders of tomorrow a unique firsthand experience at seeing how most of the world lives and a perspective on how fortunate they are. We also focus by bringing different groups within Bermuda together to enable the students to cross the local divides.”

“What about Bermuda’s needs? We have up till now focused on trips abroad as there was a local chapter of Habitat. We are this year planning to do some local work in our community home to assist those in need.”
