2011: 700 Residents To Reach Retirement Age

As the Island is set to have its largest number of new retirees, residents turning 65 this year are being encouraged to visit the Department of Social Insurance [DOSI], advised the Department’s Director, Karen Daniels.

She said: “Bermuda will face its first wave of Baby Boomers turning 65 years old this year. The Department of Social Insurance is anticipating that somewhere in the region of 700 senior residents will be reaching retirement age in 2011; the largest number in Bermuda’s history.”

“Each year, over the next 20 years we anticipate equal or greater numbers, with 2028 seeing the largest number of residents turning 65. The team at DOSI has put measures in place to ensure everyone who will be 65 years old can have their pension questions answered.”

Ms Daniels added, “Starting May 1, 2011, seniors will hear from DOSI, two months before they turn 65, inviting them to come to our offices on the ground floor of the Government Administration Building. During this meeting, we will review their pension contributions over the years and make sure their paperwork is in order to ensure they receive their pension benefits promptly. If a person is handicap or unable to come to the office, a DOSI team member will be happy to visit the person in their home.”

“Our objective is to make the transition between work and receiving a pension as easy and smooth as possible. We encourage people to visit our website at www.socialinsurance.gov.bm and review their contribution record.” Ms Daniels concluded.
