Nasir Simmons: 2011 Spelldown Champion
Last night [Apr.23] the 2011 Spelldown Competition was held at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium, and 10-year-old Nasir Simmons claimed the top spot, winning the grand prize of a family trip to Washington DC.
Nasir said, “The competition was really stiff and I am really glad I won. My mom really pushed me and I spent a lot of time coaching me so I felt prepared going in but I didn’t feel overconfident. I’m looking forward to traveling to Washington DC and hope I can get to see John Wall and the Washington Wizards play.”
Nasir attends St. George’s Preparatory School, and this is his second time competing in the Spelldown having been eliminated in the zone competition 2 years ago. The 10-year-old has big plans for the future, as he says he wants to be a physician, professional basketball player, and the Premier of Bermuda.

The Spelldown featured some of the best young students from schools across the island, and the finals were held after three preliminary zone contests were held. The West Zone contest was on April 12 at Dalton E. Tucker Primary school in Southampton, the Central Zone-down was on April 13 at Mount St. Agnes in Pembroke, and the East Zone contest was on April 13 at Elliot Primary School in Smith’s.
