Harbour Amateur Swim Club Ontario Meet

May 17, 2011

Richard Goodwin, Head Coach of The Harbour Amateur Swimming Club reported on their recent visit to compete at the Jack McCormick Swim Meet hosted by the Hamilton Aquatic Club on the campus of McMaster University. Featuring more than 20 clubs within the province of Ontario, the meet attracted over 400 swimmers. “The entire team acquitted itself well and produced some excellent swims”, said head coach Richard Goodwin.

Continuing Goodwin stated, “The high point of the overseas trip was the seven age group records set over the course of the three day meet. Grabbing four of these, whilst competing in the 10 and under age group category, was 9 year old Ashley Irby; with an excellent swim in the 200 backstroke, as well as snapping up all three records available in breaststroke as she broke the existing records in the 50, 100 and 200 metre distances. Irby took off over 9 seconds in the 200 breaststroke, setting a new record in 3:41.25; over 5 seconds in the 50 breaststroke, in a new time of 0:50.48 and lowering the 100 breaststroke record by 2 seconds in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:47.77.”

Emma Harvey broke the 200 individual medley record by over 7 seconds, with a time of 3:13.42 and led a sweep by Bermuda swimmers, as Madelyn Moore, Irby, Lynsey Palmer and Alyssa Paynter took the first 5 places. Harvey also took first place in both the 50 and 100 metre butterfly events.

Madelyn Moore, competing for the Sharks Swim Club, had a strong swim in the 800 freestyle to establish a record in 12:29.13; while Vanessa Esposito, competing for Point Claire Swim Club in Montreal, made a point of attending the meet and also establishing a record in the 800 freestyle in the 11 and 12 age group, in a time of 10:57.43.

IN closing he said, “This was the first time the bulk of the team had ever competed in a 50 metre, Olympic-size pool and I am proud of the way they all performed. Their hard work and dedication to the sport has been rewarded with their success at this meet. I also need to thank my assistant coaches – Shona Palmer, Janice Irby and Kristina Paynter, as well as the team manager, Allison Harvey, for their support and assistance on this trip”.
