The Charleston Bermuda Yacht Race prizegiving was held last night [May 29] at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club in Hamilton.  Business Development and Tourism Minister Patrice Minors was on hand to present awards to the sailors who completed the 777-mile ocean crossing. Premier Paula Cox, Hamilton Mayor Charles Gosling, US Consul Grace Shelton, Deputy Governor David Arkley, and Minister Glenn Blakeney also attended the evening event. Minister Minors is pictured below alongside Stephen Colbert:

This year the race received additional media attention due to the entry of Stephen_Colbert, the host of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report”, a satirical news show in which Mr. Colbert portrays a caricatured version of a conservative political pundit.

On May 27, “Tucana” was the first to cross the finish line just east of St. Georges Channel, finishing at approximately 8:45pm, and sailing into Hamilton at about 11:30pm. Pictured below is Hank Hofford who sailed on “Tucana,” Premier Paula Cox, and Stephen Colbert.

The second boat in was “Juno”, with Mr. Colbert aboard. It arrived at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club early on May 28th, after crossing the East End finish line at approximately 5 am and anchoring in St. George’s Harbour until sunrise.

This is Mr. Colbert’s second time competing in the event. He and a group of friends participated in the 2005 edition of the Charleston Bermuda race — crossing the finish line dead last.

Minister Minors did ask him where the pink ones were….

Stephen is looking a little scruffy there. Maybe now that the race is done he can get back to making me laugh.

I hope they all acted right around Stephen Colbert and treated him well. He has a lot of media influence and one negative comment from him about Bermuda will go a long way with Americans.
