Prolific Housebreaker Sentenced To Three Years

May 31, 2011

In Magistrates Court this morning, before Magistrate Archie Warner, forty-nine year old ‘prolific housebreaker’ Dean Anthony O’Brien pleaded guilty to a charge of trespass and stealing.

The Magistrate was told that earlier this month at a Paget residence, a teenage girl was home alone watching television. Thinking that she had heard noises from outside, she looked outside to investigate.

Seeing and hearing nothing unusual, she checked her home’s alarm system, saw that it was off, turned it on, and resumed her television watching.

The alarm was set off. On hearing the alarm go off, she went to her bedroom and looked out. It was then that she saw a dark-skinned man with a red and blue backpack crouching near the house.

She went into the bathroom and locked herself in. From the bathroom she could hear footsteps inside the house, and it was apparent that someone was walking through the hallway.

The alarm had triggered a Police response and she heard Police approach. Once certain that police were present, she came out to meet them and soon discovered that panes of glass were missing from an entrance door. On searching her possessions in her bedroom, she discovered some of her money missing.

Police searched the area and soon came upon a man with a backpack, both fitting her description. On being stopped and after being searched, the man was taken to Hamilton Police Station. The Police search found money and valuables and the victim was able to identify items as those stolen from her and confirm her sighting and identification of the culprit.

Accepting his guilty plea and before sentencing, Magistrate Warner referred to Mr O’Brien’s antecedents. These showed that he had first appeared on a serious charge in 1984, when he would have been around 22 years old.

Between then and now he had been incarcerated almost ten separate times with the longest sentence being ten years. The record showed that he had been released from prison on 28th April 2011, only twenty-seven days before he had re-offended by committing this break-in.

The Magistrate sentenced him to three years imprisonment followed by two years of probation. The Magistrate also ordered that O’Brien should be given access to a drug treatment program whilst in prison.

  2. *** says:

they should show a picture of people’s faces so others can know and avoid the person

    • i agree! says:

I absolutely agree!! This is in my neighborhood too! Always a lot of break-ins in the Warwick/Paget area. It would be great to have a face to look out for!

    • possible victim says:

I feel for you … Over the years I’ve learned that you’ve got to make it as hard as you can for them to get in .. the longer it takes them the greater chance they’ll get seen.. (big maybe)

Hide you stuff in off the wall places and take photos of everything and get it insured. Heirloom stuff can never be replaced but at least you can get something back for it .

Regretfully , there’s nothing that can ever take away the incredible feeling of being violated .

  5. Shorta ranks says:

    Yes. Let’s have a photo.

    • Terry says:

What the hell you need a photo for. Get reaL. The person is in prison. Your all mad.

      • GPS says:

JUST LIKE YOUR FEET NEED TOES, WE NEED PHOTOS

    • bernews says:

We will have a lot less photos of suspects from now on, as with the new court & police building we have no other choice.

If they are in custody they are brought from within the building, and if sentenced are taken back within the building. Meaning, no walk across the street for the media to be able to take photos.

If the person is bailed, or is in Supreme Court we can still get photos however, so will have some…but nowhere near as many as before.

  6. laja says:

If they made Westgate a horrible place to be maybe criminals will try harder not to get there… make prison a hell and lets see how many repeat offenders we get…

  7. Down 'n' Dirty says:

An endless love affair with the windowseal …Hopelessly Devoted to his craft..Nothing good could ever come of this passion ..

  8. Citizen Banned says:

To this guy and any others who fancy themselves as ‘prolific burglars’ I have a baseball bat in my place – and you won’t be walking out – you’ll be carried. You have been warned.

    • Green says:

Here here. Man and his castle and all that. In the UK you would be up for manslaughter and the burgler would sue you for damages and loss of earnings and win

  9. Just an idea says:

Short career to say the least!

  10. Fool me once says:

The convicted O’Brien will serve only one of the 3 year sentence, and then when he is out next summer what will keep him from robbing again? How is his drug addiction treated while in prison? Cold turkey and absolutely no way to get street drugs (or substitute prescription drugs) for one year? Or does he go in as a drug-driven theif and come out as a drug-driven theif?

If the prison was turned into a cottage industry and prisoners put to work to manufacture something, the Govt would have a source of revenue and prisoners would be able to learn what the working world already knows.

  11. john says:

i hate people like this, and i hate how our judges dont have the balls to sentence them properly.

  13. &^$%&^ that guy says:

    let’s all do the same
