June 28, 2011

Fathers Day was marked in a unique way by St. Paul AME Church on Sunday, 19th June, with nine Bermudian students receiving scholarships totalling $40,000.

St. Paul administers the Dame Marjorie Bean [postgraduate] and the Richard Eve [undergraduate] Scholarships awarded annually from generous legacies left for the support of education in Bermuda.

Akilah Beckles, a law student, was the $10,000 winner of the Dame Marjorie Bean Scholarship while Shaynce Joell topped the Richard Eve Scholarship.

“We had a strong field of applicants this year but these students were the best of the best and we are confident they are bound for success” said Mrs. Edwena Smith, Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee.

St. Paul’s Pastor, Rev. Dr. Lanel D. Guyton said, “St. Paul is about community outreach and through these awards we are supporting Bermuda’s future. We are so thankful to Dame Marjorie Bean and Mr. Richard Eve who determined that their legacy would be the support of education for Bermuda’s young people”.

Contributions to the scholarship funds or to St. Paul renovation project can be made to the church. Contact stpaulamebda@gmail.com for details.
