June 9, 2011

This morning [June 9] Minister of Public Works Derrick Burgess unveiled a memorial for 6-year-old Tyaisha Cox who was killed in a road traffic accident in 2003. The plaque was placed at the Victor Scott Primary School, where Tyaisha was a student.

Tyaisha was attending the Purvis Primary School in Warwick for Summer Camp in 2003 when she was tragically killed while walking across a pedestrian crossing after getting off the bus.

Minister Burgess said, “Although this could be a solemn occasion, let us celebrate her life today – and through this memorial – never forget her and the contributions she made. It is because of Tyaisha, the Government will look to bring legislation in the near future to reduce any chances of a tragedy like this happening again.”

Minister Burgess’ full remarks follow below:

Good afternoon, and thank you for coming today for this rather solemn occasion – but one in which we celebrate the life of one of Bermuda’s young students taken too soon.

Young Tyaisha Cox was a student at Victor Scott Primary and was attending the Purvis Primary School in Warwick for Summer Camp in 2003 when she was tragically killed while walking across a pedestrian crossing.

While this happened eight years ago, those who knew her will never forget. They will never forget the pain of that sad morning.

However, I’m also sure they will never forget her bright smile and her love of singing and clapping in morning assemblies.

During her short life she had an effect on so many people….lifting them up with her smile and positive can-do attitude. Indeed – this is how we should remember Tyaisha – happy, bright and smiling.

And through her parent’s courageous decision to donate her organs, she lives on through others. We also owe the community thanks for banding together to support Tyaisha’s mother and brother, Ms. Marguerite Moore and Tyshuan Brown during that difficult time.

And now she will be remembered forever with today’s unveiling of a memorial plaque dedicated to her life. The plaque was created by Sticks and Stones and depicts the image of young Tyaisha for all to remember her.

Although this could be a solemn occasion, let us celebrate her life today – and through this memorial – never forget her and the contributions she made.

It is because of Tyaisha, the Government will look to bring legislation in the near future to reduce any chances of a tragedy like this happening again.

And on that note, I would like to say thank you Tyaisha – may you rest in peace.

Thank you.

Tyaisha was killed 8 years ago. Shouldn’t the Government have already brought all legislation that could reduce the chances of something like this happening again? What’s left to be done, and why is it only being done now?

      @Phillip:

That’s a perfect question – - why? The government, through advice from the Bermuad Road Safety Council, I am sure received several ideas and recommendations to assist in that regard – so the question remains – why?

      Simple answer – election year.

    • Spikes says:

Why is it that everything this Government put forward, critics come out of the woodwork to criticize? Damn if you do or damn if you do. Please get a life you losers.

      • not for sale says:

just seeing it as it is. whats it to you?

  3. with respect .. says:

We already have hundreds of laws in place to prevent accidents on the road , the workplace and just about everywhere else ..

What possible ‘new legislation’ could the minister be referring to ? ?

    • yup says:

i think those were just random “feel good” words stated because they failed to give that poor young girl the justice she deserved the first time around.

      • Saddened says:

It was verified by even the bus driver herself that this was nothing more than a tragic accident. The driver of the car was not speeding nor did she even own a cell phone (contrary to many early rumours).

For obvious reasons , many people are still trying to make it out as though the driver of the car got away with murder. The implications are pretty obvious.

Sad ? Yes .. But it was an accident … stop trying to make it out to be more than it was .

They were supossed to be moving the crossings to BEHIND the busses instead of IN FRONT. I don’t know how far that got but that was a direct influence from this and that was started years ago!

Such a terrible thing to happen to our family…..thanks to Bernews.com I was able to see this article with a pic of my cousin and Grandma Cox all the way in Michigan…United States!
