Chamber Technology Division Invest In Future

July 19, 2011

The Business Technology Division of the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce co-hosted a Wired Wednesday Networking Event with the Technology Leadership Forum [TLF] on July 13, 2011.

The purpose of the evening was to connect Information and Communication Technology [ICT] Professionals and Executives with students pursuing studies in the discipline, as well as current and past TLF Internship Programme participants. The evening was well attended with over 60 people enjoying the evening at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.

“Networking is a very important part of the TLF Internship Programme as it allows the participants to meet the proverbial ‘movers and shakers’ in the industry in a non-office setting and for them to make a good first impression on someone who ordinarily you might never meet,” said Christian Blais, co-Chair of the TLF and Vice President of IT at Belco, “You never know where discussions may lead these young people.”

TLF, founded four years ago, fulfills an industry need by preparing qualified Bermudian talent in the ICT field. Run as a public/private partnership with the support of leading local and international technology companies and organizations, this programme aims to encourage Bermuda’s ICT students to become exposed to the many career directions that one can pursue in the technology sector.

Additionally, it offers networking events in the winter and summer to bring the industry and students together; and becomes a qualification to enter corporate internship programme, access ICT scholarship opportunities, and local recruitment programmes.

TLF highlighted its positive impact: during the evening’s proceedings Jared Pearman [pictured above], a 2010 TLF intern who is working full-time in an ICT role in the Accountant General’s Department, addressed the attendees with his experience in the programme. “My time in the TLF Internship Programme prepared me for working in the real world because it exposed me to more than what you read in a textbook, “Jared shared. “Also, the programme does not focus only on technical skills. We learned about activities that leaders in ICT must deal with, which also gives us something more to aspire towards.”

TFL Manager, Coral Wells, added, “The TLF team would like to thank all the IT professionals who attended and support our event and we look forward to additional networking opportunities for our interns.”
