Photos: ISL Knights Make It 11 Straight Wins
All three games at National Stadium on Sunday had playoff implications. The Knights were going for their 11th straight regular season win when they faced off against the 2-2 Titans. The Titans had a chance to clinch a playoff berth if they could upset the Knights.
The Knights were looking for their 11th straight regular season victory when they took the field against the Titans on Sunday at National Stadium. The two teams were scoreless for most of the first quarter. The Knights started to take control late in the stanza, but Keston Lewis couldn’t redirect a long range shot on cage, and Dennis Lattimore missed a header in front.
That allowed Titans to break thru first. With under two minutes to go in the quarter Lonnie Bascome streaked down the far wing and beat Che Clarke with a left footer to give the Titans a 1-0 lead after one quarter of play.
The Titans built the lead to 2-1 in the first minute of the second quarter. Aaron Nelson split two defenders and beat Clark to the far post. The Knights scored a controversial goal to get on the board. Keston Lewis was dribbling right along the goal line before feathering a pass in front that Vincent Minors put past Shawn Perinchief.
The Titans goal keeper argued that Lewis had dribbled over the end line. He argued with the official and was shown a red card. Dominique Lambert donned the goal keeper jersey for Titans and the Knights tied it three minutes later.
Keston Lewis received a great pass into the offensive zone behind the defense. Lewis slipped but had the presence of mind to slide the ball across the box to Vincent Minors, Minors scored into a wide open net to tie it at two.
A minute later the Titans re-took the lead. Zeko White made a run down the left wing and slipped a shot under Clark. Clark got a hand on in but watched helplessly as the ball rolled behind him and inside the far post.
The Knights had a couple of chances to equalize but couldn’t find the back of the net. They were in danger of trailing at the half of their second straight game, but the Titans were shown their third yellow card, which is an automatic blue card, right at the end of the half. Vince Minors buried the ensuing shootout into the back of the net to notch the hat trick and tie the game at three apiece.
The see-saw battle continued in the third. Kyle Jones put the Titans back on top two minutes in knocking home a rebound in front. Vince Minors tied it again and notched his fourth goal a minute later.
It was Titans four Vince Minors four. Back came the Titans, Aaron Nelson came off the bench found the ball on his foot and drove one past Clark from the midfield to make it 5-4, but seconds later someone other than Vince Minors scored for the Knights.
Minors stole the ball in the midfield and fed Ian Coke who made two nifty moves before burying a goal behind Lambert to tie the game at five. Three minutes later the Knights took their first lead of the game. Robert Richardson made a run from his own end and lofted a perfect pass to Keston Lewis in the box, who headed it past Lambert to make it 6-5 Knights after three quarters of play.
Minors struck again to start the fourth. Simon Gregory dribbled into the Titans end and fed Minors on the right wing. He beat Lambert to the far post for goal number five and the Knights had a two goal cushion 7-5. 11 minutes in Keston Lewis won the ball with his back to goal right in front of the Knights bench turned and pasted a shot to the near post that just eluded Lambert to make it 8-5 Knights.
The Knights shut out the Titans for the last 28 minutes of the game and held on for the 8-5 victory. The win is the Knights 11th straight regular season victory.
