Second Storm of Season: Tropical Storm Bret

The National Hurricane Center yesterday [July 17] started issuing warnings on newly formed Tropical Storm Bret, and the Bermuda Weather Service said the closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hrs is forecast to be 312 nm to the west at 6am this coming Thursday [July 21].

At 9:00am this morning the center of Tropical Storm Bret was located near the Northwest Bahamas.

Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph with higher gusts and some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the centre.

Bret is moving toward the northeast near 3 mph. A turn toward the North-northeast is expected later today with a gradual increase in forward speed expected tonight and Tuesday. On the forecast track, the center of Bret will passing Bermuda by some 200 miles sometime Friday.
