Ben Smith, National Coach and Sharks Swim Club Head Coach reported on the performances of the local swimmers, “The 14th FINA World Championships has been amazing over the first 4 days of the swimming competition. On Day 1 Julian Fletcher swam his lifetime best in the 100 Breast but was not at the level to make his Olympic qualifying time. Julian needs to have more opportunities to race in a 50 meter pool against strong competition as the race is completely different than the 100 yards that he swims at University.”

He continued, “On Day 2 Kiera swam her main event the 100 back where she performed well, but not at her fastest for the season, and not at the level of the qualifying time. On Day 3 Julian had his second swim in the 50 Breast where he swam his lifetime best, and broke the National record that he had set in the now banned competition suits. Kiera had her second swim on Day 4 in the 50 back where she again performed well finishing 2 tenths away from her best time.

“Roy was up next in his first event and he was able to drop 7 tenths off his National record and finish in second place in his heat. He was only 2 hundredth away from going under 51 for the first time. He is pleased with this performance as his focus has been on the 50 free where he will compete in 2 days.”

In closing Mr Smith said, “I have been pleased with the focus of the team to this point, and to have lifetime best swims after the swimsuit ban makes their performances even more important. Kiera will be up next in the 100 free in the morning and then Roy making his push in the 50.”

The 2011 World Championships, which ends on July 31, features athletes from over 70 nations competing in five aquatics disciplines: swimming, water polo, diving, open water, and synchronized swimming.
