August 25, 2011

PwC has awarded $20,000 Peter Mitchell Scholarships to two deserving young Bermudians, with both Chelsea Terceira and Michael Lindsay-Bayley named as recipients of the prestigious award.

Michael Lindsay-Bayley is currently pursuing a degree in Business Administration at Georgetown University with a double major in International Business and Accounting and a minor in Economics. He is due to graduate in 2014 and plans to pursue a career in accounting. Michael’s goal is to one day achieve a leadership role in the Bermuda business community.

Chelsea Terceira is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a major in accounting at Dalhousie University. Also due to graduate in 2014, Chelsea plans to pursue a professional accounting designation after graduating.

Both students were delighted to be recognised as PwC’s 2011 Scholars, an award named in honour of the Bermuda firm’s previous senior partner, Peter Mitchell, who passed away in 2010.

Michael said: “Receiving this scholarship is a real honour and I feel extremely fortunate to have been selected. The scholarship means a great deal to me and my family as it really helps to relieve the financial burden of tuition fees, as well as being a wonderful opportunity for me to gain unparalleled experience and learn from people who can give me great guidance as I begin my career in accounting.”

Chelsea agreed: “I am thrilled to receive this scholarship because it will enable me to complete my education. I thoroughly enjoyed the six week internship with PwC this summer, as I was able to gain real insight into what professional accountants actually do.”

Chelsea has just spent the summer working as an audit intern at PwC and will intern again with the firm in January 2012 as part of her university’s co-op programme. Michael will intern at PwC next year as part of the scholarship award.

Both the scholarship and the intern programmes are part of PwC’s HeadStart initiative, which offers meaningful work experience together with ongoing mentoring to young Bermudians interested in pursuing a career in business.

Darren Johnston, Territory Senior Partner at PwC commented on the 2011 scholars, “I am pleased to offer my congratulations to both Michael and Chelsea. They are both outstanding young Bermudians, who have shown great promise.”

“At PwC, we are focused on the continued development of young Bermudians. Our broader HeadStart programme, of which these scholarships are only one facet, provides a sound basis for developing careers.”

“We are happy to welcome Chelsea and Michael as our Peter Mitchell Scholars and to provide financial assistance as well as mentoring and support to them as they completes their studies.”

‘We wish Chelsea and Michael great success and we are confident that they will, over time, make a valuable contribution to Bermuda’s business sector.” said Mr. Johnston.

The Peter Mitchell Scholarships are multi-year awards to talented Bermudian graduate and undergraduate students in their second, third, or final year of university, who are studying towards a business degree. The scholarships are awarded not just on the basis of academic strength and a well-rounded school career, but also on character and leadership qualities.
