Tonight: Two PLP Candidates To Be Selected
[Updated] The PLP continues their candidate selection meetings, with two more scheduled this evening [Sept.22].
Walter Lister is retiring from his Sandys South Central seat – leaving the district to select a new representative. The Pembroke West Central constituency will also select their candidate this evening, where Minister Neletha Butterfield is expected to face a challenge from Senator David Burt.
The PLP has already selected four candidates this week; in Hamilton South Diallo Rabain was selected over ex-UBP MP Darius Tucker, while Rolfe Commissiong was selected over incumbent Ashfield Devent in Pembroke South East, a move which generated in excess of 200 comments from Bernews readers.
Veteran MP Stanley Lowe will not stand again in his Southampton East constituency, with the branch selecting Zane DeSilva over Lt. Col. David Burch to be their candidate. Randy Horton is the only incumbent this week to retain his seat, staving off a challenge by lawyer Marc Daniels in Southampton West.
This Evening: Sandys South Central
Constituency #34 Sandys South Central will be holding their candidate selection meeting at 7:30pm at the Allen Temple AME Church in Sandys. The PLP’s Walter Lister won in 2007 with 649 votes, against the UBP’s Sarah Burrows who received 284 votes.
Mr Lister, who was first elected to Parliament in 1976, has confirmed he will not stand for re-election. With the seat projected to swing in the PLP’s favour in the next election, it is understood there is no shortage of willing candidates for the seat including M.I.N.D.S. ralk show host and PLP organiser Makai Dickerson, PLP executive officer Dawn Simmons, and Senator Kim Wilson.
This Evening: Pembroke West Central
Constituency #18 Pembroke West Central will be holding their Candidate selection meeting at 7:00pm at the West Pembroke School. In 2007 Neletha Butterfield [573 votes] beat the UBP’s Marylyn Steede [207 votes] and Independent Roger Russell [43 votes]. Although not officially confirmed, Senator David Burt is expected to challenge Minister Butterfield for the seat.
Dear Senator Burt,
We will continue to do all we can to support you, some from the sidelines.
Marc Daniels defeat last night has slightly dimmed the hopes of a Generation, but only slightly, as we will continue to support him………. as one day we want him to negotiate any number of partnerships that can create jobs (yes here in Bermuda) or referrals into our existing international business and insurance industry, with new business partners in Latin America and using his language and cultural skills. How could the Branch Members last night not at least give marc Daniels a chance?
We really hope the Constituency 18 PLP Membership recognises the importance of your Generation taking responsibility to implement solutions for the challenges ahead, 2015, 2020, forward looking.
Bermuda is about ALL its residents David, and this is the type of cultural shift, policy change and new tone from the top that your Generation must now champion, as sadly a 1998 Toyota Corolla can never perform at the level as a 2011 Toyota Corolla, no matter how many times you repaint the old car.
There is a place for experience, wisdom and respecting our elders mentors and forefathers, but Bermuda’s fate and future prosperity must now embrace a new team, and a new Generation, both in our political and corporate life to maintain our Island’s international relevance and the aspirations of ALL our residents, not just a few.
Our past tells us the folly of focussing only on a few.
Good luck tonight and keep your head and feet firmly on the ground.
FYI, I could care less young or old as long as they do what they are elected to do. Also I would love to see more young Bermudian’s playing their part in Politics! As long as they see it as a career of service to the People of Bermuda.
However after dealing with Mr. Burt on numerous occassions and many different levels, I don’t find him to be a person that I could count on.
As a PLP member who believes in the right to vote, I may be looking at change, yes change as in changing my PARTY! Vote for the man and not the Party cause I haven’t seen an overall benefit these past 13 years, I am stuggling to “do more with less”, while living in an island where everything goes up except my pay!
Just a thought:
As a young middle aged voter, I am all for change when it is done with the voters in mind. I believe that candidates should spend more time on the door step if you wnat the vote. I’ve seen Ms. Butterfield numerous times, Mr. Burt, never!
And you need to know your neighborhood in order to represent it, I’ve seen Ms. Butterfield at Western Stars Sports Club (neighborhood) on numerous occassions, and I’ve never encountered Mr, Burt there unless Devonshire Cougars is playing, why not go to that neighborhood?
@ Just A Thought
like many you embrace the past, I also see MP Butterfield at MANY community events and on MANY doorsteps, but outside the Learning Centre being state funded what other issues is she now truly passionate about dealing with and taking responsibility for.
Change the conversation from Candidate, to Issues, and whether or not the Candidate has the Testicular Fortitude (I quote our Premier) to actuallt take the responsibility for a task, request or issue and actually deal with it to the satisfaction of the voter on the doorstep.
I am young and refuse to simply vote for MP Butterfield because she visits every community event as based on everything I have seen and her conduct…in her mind politics is now ceremonial and a comfort which she and many other MPs like her have earned the right to keep and this is why they are fighting tooth and nail to keep…………their salaries, the door step and talking about issues are simply part of the course, you dont have to do anything.
instead of excluding every young candidate, get us to agree to undertake a mid-term evaluation in 2 years, like we do in our other careers and if you arent satisfied with the work we have done then we will walk away via a by-election and you can reinstall hard working performers like MPs Butterfield and Horton.
list 4 major initiatives that MP Butterfield and Horton have delivered on during the shooting crime wave, recession with loss of jobs and continued decline in our education system………the time for a polite leisurely stroll every 5 years were u do nothing is done Bermudas residents need results
What these selections are showing to me is that the PLP has a deep pool of talent regardless of who wins. At some stage yes the older must give way to a new generation. And it is not disrespect, but it’s giving the voter a choice.
But I am proud that the Party has so much talent to select from. It bodes well for the future.
we dont want nobody knocking our door or telling us about race – we all know what the problems are
just do your $168,000 JOB since you are elected and get results so people can go and catch work and pay their cable bill
we need leaders to do the job not just walk around talking alot of talk about hows your auntie uncle and grandmama………..old MPs OUT……….new MPs IN and if they play around we’ll kick them out too
I wish Marcus Jones all the best as he stands to be choosen as a candidate for PLP,a home grown Somerset man with deep roots in Cook’s Hill….!
Minister Butterfield , the next office you’ll be sitting in will have Pension on the door . Chow for now , You will get your hair blown back .
The more things change, the more they remain the same. It is tragic, but somehow the PLP has become the Establshment and seems more interested in Power for Powers sake, rather than doing what is right, fair and equitable at all times. Freddy Wade is turning in his grave….
drunkenUrsula,
Marcus is one of Paula Cox’s puppets, so dont think you getting much for your vote he is a toe the line and follow as your told kinda guy……….use your vote wisely and go for Kim or Larry that way you get some work done by people who wont ignore you in the street

hmm interesting ..pls let us know which candidate you are
and are only young educated professionals the ones who should be eligible for the next generation?
